Devyn's POV.

Our roaring laughter was all that could be heard on the mostly empty book store we were in. The lady at the front desk just smiled at us instead of telling us to be quiet.

Adrian was laughing so hard his entire face was red, Claudia was giving off the wildest grin I've ever seen someone have and as for me, I haven't felt this happy in a long while.

I barely know these two and they make me feel so welcome. " Thanks for inviting me here Adrian. " I say once we can talk again.

He grins at me. " Anytime. I knew we would all get along. " says Adrian.

" You we're right on that one. " says Claudia. " You sure found us a good one. "

I blush a little at their kindness. It's nice to have friends already. " Oh I say we all exchange numbers so we can keep in contact. " says Claudia.

" I'm down if you are?" I say looking at Adrian.

" You kidding, of course I'm down. " he says.

The three of us bring out our phones and give each other our numbers. Just before I'm about to put my phone up, I get a text from my father.

Dad/ Where are you? You better not be out with some boy!! /

I growl a little in anger at his message. He's still as possessive as always. It's so annoying.

Me/ I'm just reading at the book store. I'll be heading back in a few. /

I set my phone down and look at them. " I got to get going. My dad needs my help before the BBQ tonight. " I say.

One look at the clock let's me know that it's nearing two in the afternoon. Dad must have gotten off work early to prepare for this get together. That's weird, he's never wanted to be early for anything ever.

I get up and Claudia gives me a hug. " We will see you tonight at the BBQ. " says Claudia.

" Sounds good to me. " I say. I say bye to them and start my walk back home.

Why is my dad so possessive? It makes no sense. I am his daughter, not his property. There's still pet of me that fears him when he's angry and wants to do anything I can to keep him happy.

I don't want things to go back to the way they were before. Maybe if things get bad I can crash at Claudia's place? Ah who am I kidding?

My mom didn't even want me, why would she? I'll only be a burden to her. That's all I was to my mother anyway.

I shake my head at those thoughts. No, I can't let myself spiral right now. I have to much to do. My phone vibrating startled me.

I pull it out and look. It's from Claudia.

Claudia/ Your dad is possessive, isn't he? /

My eyes widened. How did she come to that conclusion. I'm about to respond when another text from her comes in.

Claudia/ Sorry if that was blunt, I'm known for being to straight forwards sometimes. I just saw the look on your face when he texted you. I wanted to make sure you were ok? /

She cares about me enough to check up on me already? That's so sweet of her.

Me/ Yeah, I'm fine. He is possessive, especially around other men. He was the same to my mother and my brother growing up.  /

That reminds me. In case my dad ever gets my phone, I better change Adrian's name to a girls name so he doesn't know the difference.  I've now changed his name to Alexis.

Claudia/ I understand. Text me if anything happens. I'm getting a weird feeling that your dad is bad news. /

If only she knew.

Me/ I will. Thank you Claudia. /

I then delete the previous messages so my dad won't ever suspect a thing. Just like I did in high school.

My dad made it so impossible to even talk to a guy let alone be friends with one. He's not one of those guys that does any type of sexual abuse.  He despises that, but he doesn't care about hitting us or anything else for that matter.

He's more possessive in the ways of, this is my family, you live under my house you live by my rules kind of guy.

It's so annoying at times. I soon make it back to my house and walk in. My father is leaning against the kitchen counters. He looked apologetic. " I'm sorry. " he says.

My eyes widened and I grew confused. " I shouldn't have assumed you were out with a boy. I let my old ways cloud my new self. I'm sorry for that. " says my father.

I offer a smile, still not sure what to think of this new him. Part of me wants to cheer for this new side while the other person of me knows his old self will show any day now.

" It's ok I guess. " I say.

His mood brightens and he grins. " Good, I need your help preparing for tonight. I said I'd bring something for tonight and I need help making it. " he said.

I laugh a little and walk forwards to help him. Once we finish with that, the two of us sit down and watch some tv until it's time to go.

We get into my dads car and he drives us through town, showing historic landmarks and the best places to eat.

" So did you make a friend today? " he asks.

" Yes, her name is Claudia. She'll be at the BBQ tonight. " I say.

" well good. I'm glad you met someone. " he says.

" You know I'm not in high school anymore right?" I say with a slight laugh.

" So, that doesn't mean I can't encourage my daughter to make friends in the town she lives in. " says my father.

" True. " I say. He did have a point.

Finally, we pull up into someone's yard and I feel the strangest feeling wash over me. I shake my head. Probably just my imagination. It felt like someone was watching me though or looking this way.

With that last though, I exit the car and slam the door behind me.
