Devyn's POV.
The morning is quiet. Father is gone before I even woke up. He left me a note saying he'd be back two hours before the BBQ tonight.
That works for me, though I do feel a bit lonely since mom was always with me before. I'll be fine though. I don't need people around to make me feel better.
I'm going to meet new people today anyway. I hope this girl that Adrian is bringing along is nice. I could use a new friend. Maybe Adrian could be my friend too?
I don't know if I'd consider him one yet since we only met yesterday. He's nice though, so that's a plus I guess. I get up and get ready to start my day.
I head over to the bathroom where I proceed to brush out my ombré-ashy blonde hair. Once finished I pull it back into a bell messy bun. I then start brushing my teeth. Once done with that I finish up the rest of my morning routine before I head back to my room to get dressed.
I go with a nice button up white shirt and black boot cut jeans. Matching white tennis shoes and a silver cross necklace my mother gave to me when father first left us.
As I finish getting dressed, I turn and start making my way towards the kitchen to get food. I find the makings for a bowl of cereal and soon I am sitting down enjoying my breakfast.
Once I finish eating, I grab my new book and sit down on the front porch swing and start to read. I am rather surprised by how well written this book is and the concept of it. A wizard of school, very creative.
A boy learning magic and finding out he has people there that care for him and would do anything for him. I envy that actually. But, after all, this is purely fictional whereas my situation is real life. I can't keep comparing my life to a books.
What's done is done and I need to get my head on straight and accept the fact that my life has now changed. I'll just have to make the most of it here. After I read for a while longer I see what time it is and decide to head down to the library.
I lock the door behind me and I take my book with me. I'll be a little early, so I can read more while I wait. I wonder what this friend is like? Will she like me? Can I even make friends? What if my father ruins this friendship like he did my precious ones growing up with his possessive tendencies?
My father has always be possessive of what he considers " his ". It's always ticked me off because he would never let us do anything. We always had to go through him. I remember once, my older brother asked father multiple times if he could go out with his friends.
Father got so angry and said no. He said that same line. ' You live under my roof, you abide by my rules. '
Let's just say my brother wasn't happy with that. They got into a screaming match. It ended with my dad punching my brother in the face so hard that he broke my brothers nose. It was the first time he ever physically hit one of us. He was so apologetic afterwards, only that didn't last long.
Soon after, he started to get physical with all of us. He claimed if was his me way to keep us all in line. M brother was ready to leave, the second he got accepted into his collage, he was out the door and gone before we could even register what happened.
I don't blame him, he went through the worst of it. Once he left though, I was the main target. Some punching, kicking. He'd occasionally hit me with a belt. I was his outlet for his anger. He barely laid a finger on mother.
Mother would just sit there and watch it happen. I never understood why, but I forgave her for not doing anything to help. She was always there to help clean me up if it got bad, which it rarely did.
Thankfully, father mostly screamed at me, that would lead to him hitting me, but it was never as bad as what my brother has to deal with. I wish I was with my brother sometimes. I miss him dearly.
I finally make it to the library and walk inside. I thought I beat Adrian, turns out he was already waiting at a table with a girl next to him. They were both sitting and reading different books.
He had a Harry Potter book and she had the first book to The Hunger Games. I walk up and wave awkwardly. " Hi." I mutter, thankfully loud enough for them to hear.
Her head snapped up immediately. She had dark brown eyes, and long wavy brown hair. A huge grin took over her face and her eyes dazzled with delight.
" Oh my gosh! Adrian describe you to me, but he didn't tell me you looked this good. " she cried.
She stood up and rushed over to me. She envelopes me in a hug, to which I awkwardly return with one arm. She laughs and backs up. " Hi, I'm Claudia. It's so nice to meet you. " she says.
I chuckle. " I'm Devyn. Nice to meet you too. " I say. I find myself relaxing in her presence, as well as his. They seem so nice already. I like that a lot.
" Come on dude. We're reading for a bit and then we rant about what we read to each other for a little. It's like our own little book club. " she cried.
That actually sounds awesome. " I'm all in. " I say.
She claps and cheers. " Shhhhh!!! " came the call from the librarian.
Claudia just laughs and pulls me over to the table. " Come on. Let's get started. I have a feeling that this is the start to a beautiful friendship. " she says as we sit down next to Adrian, who is currently trying not to laugh loudly.
I allow myself a grin. " Of that, I have no doubt. " I reply. She grins even wider. This may be better then I originally though.
With that we all open our books and start reading in a comfortable silence.
