JOLIE
I stood with my back against the door until I heard Parker’s heavy footsteps signal that he finally left. Today didn’t go as planned at all. I didn’t mean to slap him, but I was so pissed off at his insinuation that somehow I was doing drugs with Trevor was just too much and pushed me too far. All I wanted was for him to trust me.
“Is that dickweed gone yet?”
I look up at Trevor who is sitting on the edge of the bed, acting as if nothing had happened. “That dickweed is my boyfriend and he’s just looking out for me.”
“Seriously, Jo, I can’t believe you have a boyfriend. That’s so not you at all.”
“I’m not the same person that you knew a couple of years ago. I already told you that. “
“Yeah, you are, people like us never actually change, baby girl.” Trevor gets up and walks over to the side table. He takes a dollar bill out of his pocket and rolls it tight, preparing to take another hit of the substance left on the table.
“Can you not do that in front of me?”
“I told you that you could take a hit if you wanted,” he holds the bill in my direction, but I slap his hand away.
“I don’t want a hit from your damn drugs, Trevor. God, you are such a mess.”
“You’re one to talk! Wasn’t too long ago that you were all messy and shit right next to me. What happened anyway?”
“I got picked up by the cops, and had enough to be charged with intent to distribute.”
“Oh shit, so why aren’t you locked up somewhere?”
I shake my head, “Police Chief called my dad.”
Trevor rolls his eyes, “Oh, of course, daddy dearest came to your rescue.”
“Hardly my rescue. It would have been a PR nightmare for him. He was being selfish like always. The only good thing is that they got me into a really excellent rehab center and here I am, clean and happy.”
“What are you doing here with me then, Jo?”
“I don’t know. Just trying to help you, Trev.”
“I don’t want your help, Jo. I’m happy right now.”
“How can you be happy when you’re like…”
“Like what?” He cuts me off. “Not stressing over the small shit? Enjoying my fucking life and doing whatever the hell I want?”
“That feeling isn’t going to last forever and then you’re going to have nothing.”
“God, you’re so uptight. I miss the old, Jo.”
“Well, she’s gone and I need to go too. Please get help, Trevor. I’m begging you.”
I grab my phone and purse and leave Trevor in the past where he should have been, to begin with. I walk down the street to the shopping center that constitutes a mall in this place. I tried to call for a cab, but they couldn’t even give me an ETA on when somebody could be here. So I decide to call Toni instead.
“Hey girly, where are you?”
“Hi, Toni. I’m in Gypsum.”
“Why the hell are you there?”
“Long story, but would you mind picking me up?”
“Sure I can, but wouldn’t you rather Parker come to get you? He’s been worried sick about you since you left the bar with that guy.”
