FEBRUARY 15TH 1982
It was finally Friday. Robin and I were going to have a 2 night sleepover and we were extremely excited. I skipped into Mrs Campbell's and said good morning, she responded with a warm smile. I sat down at my table and pulled out my book, continuing the drawing I was doing yesterday. Steve came in and slouched in his seat. I looked at him but then looked back at my drawing, unsure of what to say to him. After 10 minutes, I sighed and looked back at him. "Steve, I'm so-" "Doesn't matter." He interrupted. I guess I must have really hurt his feelings. I turned back to my drawing and shook it off. I started to write in the corner of my page;
'I'm sorry, okay? Valentines Day is just not my thing and that necklace you got me for Christmas is stored in a safe spot on my desk. I was just confused as to why you got me it out of everyone and why you asked ME to be your Valentines... I'm sorry.' I ripped it out and slid it to him. He started to read it and when he finished, he ripped it up. You've messed everything up, Eve. I thought to myself, letting out a heavy sigh.Class finished and I got up, quickly leaving to get out of the awkward situation. Robin was waiting right outside so I grabbed her arm and took her to our spot. It was an alley between the gym and school and we tend to go there when we don't want to be in a public area. "What's up?" She asked, swinging her arm over my shoulder. "I didn't tell you this but yesterday Steve Harrington asked me to be his Valentines and I said no because, 1- I hate Valentines Day and 2- It's awkward. He got me a rose and a letter too. Then at lunch he glared at me and rolled his eyes. I apologised to him in art with a little note because he interrupted me but he ripped it up!" I spoke quickly. I took a deep sigh of relief. It felt good to get that out. Her eyes widened and she looked at me in shock before laughing. "You should have said yes. It would have pissed Nancy off." She led me out of the alley and towards our next class with Mr Clarke. "I have to sit next to him in every class except band practice. It's going to be so painful." I groaned. I was dreading it. I might just not show up to school again. We got outside of class and I looked at Robin. "Good luck with Carol." I whispered, walking inside. I sensed her roll her eyes and I laughed to myself. I sat down beside Steve who was busy talking to Tommy. The whole lesson he didn't say a word to me. So when another project was assigned in pairs... with the person sat next to you. My face dropped. I turned around to face Robin who looked at me in despair. Oh what we would do to move seats. When the bell went off, I grabbed my bag and stood up. "I'm guessing you want me to do your part of the project too." I grabbed my book but to my surprise he shook his head. "No, I like this project. I'll come to yours after school to start it." He responded, walking out of the classroom. I turned to face Robin and she looked back at me with a shocked expression, immediately walking up to me. "Did he just speak to you?" She asked. I nodded. "He's coming to mine after school to do the project." I replied, puzzled. Was I dreaming this? I thought. "But I'm coming to yours after school!" Her eyebrows furrowed. "I know. You'll just have to deal with him being there." I linked arms with her and we walked out the classroom.
After school, Robin and I were in my room, waiting for Steve. "Eve! There's someone at the door for you." I heard my mom shout. I looked at Robin and shook my head. "I regret it already." I got up and left my room, going towards the door. Dustin was already there, talking to him. I was completely baffled. "Hey Dustin, what did Mom say about talking to strangers?" I asked him, messing his hair up. He was only 10 but extremely social. "She said not to do it but she also said my teeth will come through and they haven't yet so-" He walked off, proud of himself, leaving me and Steve there with puzzled looks on our faces. "Come in-" I said, closing the door behind him. "I'll go get my bag from my room, make yourself comfy." I walked off and went to my room, seeing Robin holding the necklace Steve got me for Christmas. "I thought you threw this away." She pointed out. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my bag, then snatched the necklace off her and put it away. "I couldn't. It looks expensive." I replied. "Sure. Anyways, I'm going to hang out with Dustin so you and Steve can focus on your project." She got up and skipped out my room, I followed behind her, going back to the living room. Steve was sat talking to my mom before I motioned her to leave. I took the things out my bag and sat down. I started to talk about the project when I noticed him staring at me. "Eyes on the project, Harrington." I laughed. He looked away with a smirk on his face. We both continued with a project. By the time we finished, it was 11pm. "Wait, so you've been kept behind in all your classes but still a grade above me?" I asked, confused. He had been explaining this to me for 5 minutes and I still didn't understand. "Yeah." He nodded, chuckling to himself. "Right..." I think I was starting to understand now. "Eve's friend, would you want a lift home? It's dark and I can't let you walk." My mom asked, coming in from her kitchen. Steve nodded and slipped his shoes on. "Sorry for staying so late Ms. Henderson. Bye, Adam!" He waved bye and left, my Mom following behind. I packed everything into my bag and left it on the couch, going into Dustin's room. I tucked him into bed and woke Robin up, putting a finger to my mouth, telling her to be quiet. We went back to my room and we got changed into our pyjamas, getting into bed. "So, Steve stayed pretty late." She whispered, leaning on her hand. "We decided to get the project done in one night." I whispered back, trying to sleep. "You were laughing and giggling. Is this a new relationship on it's way?" She laughed and I rolled my eyes, turning my back to her. "Shut up and go to sleep."
