"Destiny Jacobs!"
Navia stood up clapped her hands loudly as she watched Destiny walk to the memory of her highschool hall stage.
Navia sat down in one of the empty spaces next to countless memories of other students and parents.
"Not to brag," she whispered to one of them,"but that's my sister. She was valedictorian meaning she was way better than your son...or daughter...or both."
Destiny held on to the faint memory of her gown and cap that she managed to slip on and took a bow.
She looked at Navia in the crowd.
She couldn't remember the last time she searched a crowd and actually met the eyes of someone she was looking for.
This was a new feeling, a feeling she was ready to get used to."I am super proud of you Dee," Navia said as she gave Destiny a big tight hug.
"Thanks Nav," Destiny responded with a smile as she pulled away.
She looked Navia up and down and smiled."Try on my gown."
Navia's eyes widened. "I what?"
"Try on my gown."
Destiny slid off the gown and held it out to Navia who hesitantly placed a hand on it before taking it.
"...there...you...go," Destiny said as she straightened the cap onto Navia's head of dreadlocks.
She smiled.
She knew that this was a fantasy Navia played out in her head but would never speak of.
Navia struck a few poses as she laughed at herself.
She never really took time to analyse how much she knew she missed out on in highschool.
She considered going back...but only for a second. But one thing about seconds is that they'll always add up to something bigger.
"I wanna make a speech."
"Huh?"
"Stand here."
Navia rushed down to the stage and took time to stare at Destiny as though she had seen her for the first time.
"Hello everyone," Navia started. "I'm Navia Jacobs. A proud attendant."
Destiny chuckled.
"I just wanted to say a bit about my sister, Destiny."
Navia smiled at Destiny. She smiled back.
"Most of you here know Destiny as...top of her form and best in the district. To some she's a classmate... A friend...even some guy named Luke who's gonna call her just a friend for the first few weeks. Some real Adrienne and Marinette stuff."
"Really?"
Navia smiled. "To some she's a daughter...a granddaughter. But to me, she's still the kid I convinced could grow apple trees in her stomach if she ate the seeds. She's still the girl who'd ask me to leave the crack of her door open to let light in. She's the girl who'd creep into my bed at night during storms. She's my sister."
Destiny wiped away a tear that managed to make its way down.
"Lemme tell you, there's a lot of amazing people out there in this world who deserve so much but for some reason, one of the worst was blessed with the chance to call her family. Ladies and gentlemen, that worst is me. I don't know when I will ever manage to make up for all the hurt I caused her and-and if I could turn all those arguments into girl talks and...and fights into sleepovers I would. But that's the thing about memories...the same memories that surround us now, they cannot be altered. They're just a reminder. A reminder that every moment will become a memory eventually so it's our choice to create moments worth remembering. That's because we won't be able to hold on to moments but our memories...they're forever. I love you Destiny."
