Everyone's angel

"Sorry for your loss Navia."

"My condolences."

"Poor thing."

"She must be devastated."

Navia felt nauseated by each remark at the funeral.

Everyone was dressed in black, mourning...she didn't even know half of the people there.
Destiny probably did. She was the social one.

"That's her sister. She was the one driving."

She followed the whisper and was led to a group of girls standing by one of the trees, whispering.

She recognized them.

Destiny's memory in the girls' bathroom.

She felt rage run up and down her blood vessels.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted everyone to leave.
Why were they all there?
It was supposed to be Navia and Destiny only.
Where did they all come from?

She took in a deep breath and exhaled all her emotions away.

Destiny wouldn't want her screaming at her funeral.

She told Navia that it was no one's fault.

If Destiny said it, no one else's words mattered.

Navia made her way to the front.

Destiny's coffin was quite small, like her.
It was covered in so many flowers and notes.

Navia fought back tears.

It was funeral, so of course she could cry.
But she was going to be strong.
She was going to be strong for Destiny.

She wondered what Destiny looked like in there.
Although she had lots of injuries from the accident, she was beautifully in an everlasting slumber.

Breathless.

Lifeless.

Beautiful.

Navia gave her remarks exactly as she did at Destiny's make-up graduation.

"To some, she was daughter..."

Every word suited the moment.

She did her best to maintain eye contact with the crowd despite how much it hurt.

She saw everyone.

Jennifer. Joshua. Grandma Lauren. Yasmin. Luke. Miss Carmichael. Headmaster Phillip.

She spotted Bertrand sitting next to his twin brother, John.

Bertrand had managed to track down his brother and found out he was in a coma the same time as Navia and Destiny.
He sat by his brother's bedside in hospital until he recovered and said he wouldn't have forgiven himself if his brother died and he hadn't said goodbye.

Navia smiled through the tears that she quickly wiped away.
She was glad she to say goodbye. Even though it wasn't long enough.

He also said talking to Destiny gave him the confidence to do so.

Navia smiled.
You hear that Dee? Navia thought to herself. You're everyone's angel.

...

The following day, Navia sat by one of the benches of the city park, sketchbook in hand.

She took occasional breaks as though she struggled to find inspiration.

She looked around.

People were cycling, jogging, walking their dogs.

Each sound felt individually loud to Navia as though she managed to truly see her surrounding for the first time.

She daydreamed of her and Destiny having a picnic there. It was perfect.

But Destiny wasn't there...

"Daddy look!"

Navia focused her attention on a little girl who tugged at her father's leg. "Look at that cloud. Look at it!"

Navia, as though the little girl was talking to her, looked up.

She couldn't believe it.

Her eyes stung with tears but she didn't bother to wipe them off as soon as they started making their way down. She wasn't going to waste a second doing so.

"It looks just like a butterfly," the little girl yelled.

Navia smiled to herself and whispered.

"Isn't it pretty? Destiny the butterfly cloud."

******************************

Hi guys! Thanks so much for taking time to read Navia and Destiny. It's a story really close to my heart and I hope you enjoyed it.

Quick backstory, I came up with this during the whole covid lockdown between March and September of 2020.
Originally, it was a  manuscript for a screenplay I wrote when I was 14.

(End of backstory lol)

Can't wait to graduate highschool and do this more often haha.

(Feel free to check out my other books if you)

Bye!
