That night, I took a glass of wine and my nightcoat and took to the balcony.
The stars sparkled brighter than they did in the Eastern Empire.
It was amazing.
"Beautiful, aren't they?"
I turned my head slightly to see King Barvoscha dressed in a plain white button shirt with his sleeves rolled up and black pants rippling against his legs as he came towards me.
"Indeed." I commented crisply.
The Northern King leaned on the balcony rail beside me and tipped his head up.
"I looked into your story."
I smirked and raised an eyebrow. "My story?"
The King nodded. "Your romance story."
Blood rose beneath my cheeks.
"Oh."
Barvoscha nodded. "I learned about the former emperor, the current emperor and my ambassador. Aren't you tired?"
My heart stopped. Was I tired? Tired of what? Having every relationship fail or go unnoticed?
Yes.
Yes I was.
I nodded at the king and he stared into my eyes. I couldnt look away.
The Northern Kings eyes were black as an endless abyss and they sucked me in and made me unable to break his gaze.
"I get it now." He said, looking away.
"Get what?"
Barvoscha moved closer to me and looked up at the stars while he spoke.
"Youre tired of all the failing relationships. You want somone to settle with you, to be happy with. Somone who can give you everything."
The Northern King had gotten awfully close to me, his nose almost brushing against mine.
My heart was fluttering.
Did I want this?
"Somone who you can love."
I broke away and stepped back.
"With all due respect your majesty, I loved the Northern Ambassador and I loved my husbands."
He was silent.
"Loved."
"Pardon?"
The Northern ambassador closed the new space I made between us.
"You said loved. Not love."
I blushed furiously.
"I-i only meant it in the heat if the moment. Think nothing of it."
Barvoscha sighed and leaned against the rail again, running a hand through his white hair.
"My apologies."
I gave a sigh and put my hand on the King's arm.
"No, no. It was my wrong. Please don't feel remorseful."
He jumped at my touch, but otherwise said nothing.
Silence filled the gap between our souls as we gazed at the stars.
"Is it hard being empress?"
I smiled at the simple question.
"Its bumpy at times, but if you know what you're doing it's fine."
Barvoscha nodded.
"Have you ever cried so hard that your body hurt?"
I looked at the towering man before me.
