I listen carefully to Armin's plan of possibly making it back to Shiganshina.
"...if supply wagons don't have to be accommodated we can make our way to Shiganshina much faster."
Hange nods, "That's not bad, but what about all of the titans between Shiganshina and Wall Rose? It's like suicide out there."
"What if we did it in the dead of night?" I suddenly blurt out.
Everyone turns to me with looks of slight confusion.
"Night?" Hange asks.
I stare blankly towards my boots, and nod slowly, "Yeah, then the titans are effectively motionless. We could slip by undetected."
It's definitely possible. I know it is...
Hange stares at me in slight shock, "That's not bad at all, in fact, it's genius Y/N. I would've never thought of that..."
Armin gives me the same stare, "Yeah... neither would I."
Hange continues, "The straits we're in are as dire as they come, but there might just be the teeniest bit of slack."
Armin's expression seems to falter a bit, "Just bear in mind though... that the whole plan hinges on whether or not Eren can seal a hole, again."
Suddenly Eren's expression becomes nervous. But no pressure, right? I sigh to myself, poor kid...
"It's probably unfair of me to even ask," Hange starts, "but do you think you can?"
The carriage is silent for a moment as we all stare at Eren expectantly. He shifts uncomfortably trying to avoid our gaze.
As much as I feel sorry for Eren, Armin's right. The only way we reclaim Shiganshina and Wall Maria is with him...
The silence is abruptly broken by the Captain leaning forward.
"What he thinks isn't really the issue." He says, "You either will, or you won't. That's the reality. Our comrades are breaking their backs... but without you, it's nothing."
I lightly clench my jaw, I hate it when I agree with the Captain...
"Failure isn't an option. Do you understand?" He finishes.
Eren takes a sharp breath before responding, "Sir! I'm prepared to do whatever it takes! That's a promise."
I slightly smile to myself, that's the Eren I know. Now let's just hope he doesn't get himself killed with his promise.
Suddenly Eren reaches for the key around his neck.
He holds it up, "My father's cellar. That's where all the answers are. If there's a grain of truth in what he told me... everything depends on us making it there."
The famous basement... I remember Erwin mentioning that to me after Eren's trial, and from what he said about it, it sounds like he really wants to know what answers Eren is talking about.
I guess I can't blame him, I'm pretty curious myself. I wasn't super close with Grisha, but whenever I visited Eren's house he was always just coming back from the basement. I'm sure Erwin will be happy to hear about us already forming parts of a plan to get to it.
The carriage falls silent once again, this time a feeling of sobriety drapes over us all. The weight of Eren's role in our fight for humanity is a risky thing to bargain with. We're all silent for the rest of the ride, in our own thoughts until torches come into view, along with the looming gate to Ehrmich.
