Lucas wasn't sure what he was doing on the mountain.

Maybe he was driven by the chance that just maybe, maybe those three kids were still down there- still alive, suffering after all these months. He had to do something. No one else in the village would. Honestly, he found it shocking that a random teenager who was bullied all his life was able to be more kind than the wealthy people who always donated to charity.

He took his grappling hook and rope, swinging it around his waist. His boot hit the first ledge, as he began his careful descent into the depths. After a few minutes of climbing down, he jumped onto a patch of grass where the sunlight fed small buds. It looked like one had started to bloom. Lucas smiled. It reminded him of his flower crown from home.

There were tracks of dirt on the purple tinted path before him- three he could count. He took off his boots and knocked it against a wall of the cavern, the soil gathering into a clump at the foot of the wall.

"Hello?"

Lucas turned, coming face to face with a goat woman. He'd heard stories of the monsters before but... he didn't expect them to be this tall. He put on a smile, the type he used to greet strangers, and dropped his boots next to the pile of soil.

"Hey there!" He laughed, a nervous chuckle brimming around his voice, "Pleasure to meet you...?"

"Toriel, caretaker of the Ruins,"  The goatly woman returned Lucas' smile with a warm one of her own, shaking his extended hand, "You are much more polite than the other children. What is your name, my child?"

"Uh, Lucas, Ms. Toriel," He said, feeling the strands of soft fur on his rough hands, "Lucas Kinstone. Wait, the other chil-"

"Come, let me show you the way of the Ruins," Toriel took back her hand and folded it over the other, letting them hang just under her stomach.

"Wait just a second," Lucas sat down on the stone floor, trying to fit his heel back into his boot, "I've got to put these on."

And so they traversed.
