The small sleepy town was quiet, only a cool breeze blowing through the air brought a low whistle. I walked along the street kicking at little pebbles and pieces of gravel. The sun fit perfectly along the horizon painting the town in a golden orange and warm reds. I walked out to a wooden pier on the lake, a lone bench sat at the end. I leaned against the railing and took a deep breath in. The air left my nose red and tingling and my lungs felt bigger, fresher, stronger. The water was still, it looked almost like a mirror. As I gazed down I saw my reflection, I realized how desperately I needed a shower and a brush through my hair. I hadn't noticed the bags under my eyes until now, and how my hair looked curled and tangled around my shoulders. I sighed and tried to run my fingers through my hair, after a few painful minutes I had to stop. Suddenly the sound of a creaking board made me jump, I spun around getting ready to look down the barrel of a gun. My body froze. Bundled up in a dark forest green sweater and a dirty white scarf wrapped around her neck and face. I could feel my face warm up against the breeze. She pulled the scarf down a little and smiled, her breath danced on her lips in a light mist. Her dark skin looked so soft, her cheeks were covered in small freckles and her nose had a small tint of pink. I didn't realize I was staring until she giggled, goosebumps ran up my neck at the sweet sound. "I've never seen you before, are you new stranger?" I stood there frozen watching her. Finally I shook myself out of my trance. "Y-yes new yeah." She smiled and sat down on the bench and patted the empty spot next to her. Suddenly my hair felt to messy, my face to dirty, I quickly tried to flatten the wrinkles out of my shirt and sit down next to her. She held a medium sized black book in her lap and a pencil on top of it. I couldn't help but stare, she sipped on a coffee cup. Steam seeped out of the cup, the breeze blew through her curly hair and made it dance against her face and neck. Her hazel eyes seemed to study the lake, when her gaze landed on me my body suddenly felt on fire and I had to look away. I could hear her lightly giggle and put her cup down. She opened the black book to an empty page and began to draw. I tilted my head and watched her, the pencil was guided along the page smoothly lines and curves and marks are made with such careful and delicate motions. After a few minutes of quiet I realized I recognized what was on the paper. "Is that the lake?" My voice sounded so loud in the peaceful quiet and I immediately regretted speaking. She smiled and looked at me nodding. "I come out here to draw in the mornings before work. It's always just been me alone out here no one else is ever awake." She pushed her curls behind her ear, my breath hitched in my throat. A lone curl slipped out from behind her ear and swung against her dark milky cheek. A strange thought suddenly came to mind, how soft is her skin? She closed the black book and turned her body towards me bringing one of her legs up onto the bench and leaned on it staring intensely at me. Every muscle in my body tensed up, I stared back awkwardly but couldn't keep eye contact. Her gaze was powerful and gave me a weird feeling all over me, but I didn't mind it in fact I liked it a little. "What's your name?" I met her eyes, the sun hit her face perfectly her eyes shined in the light, the little pools of green with light flecks of gold drew me in. "Alexandrine, but I just go by Alex." She smiled and held her hand out to me. "Millie Citrus, it's nice to meet you Alex." My cheeks got warmer and I tried to hide my hand as I wiped it on my shorts before shaking her hand. My fingers easily wrapped around her hand, and I was right her skin was soft and smooth almost like a silk blanket. We shook hands and her grasp slipped out of my touch, we sat there in silence for a while just smiling at each other. Eventually she sighed and stood up checking her watch. "I've gotta go to work, it was nice meeting you. I hope we meet again, Alex." And before I could get a breath out she was walking back towards the town. My heart was beating against my ears as my body felt so sweaty and warm. I couldn't help but let a big smile spread across my lips as I leaned against the bench and looked up at the sky. Maybe today wasn't gonna be so bad.
I opened the hotel door and walked back into the room. Stacy ran up and hugged me right wrapping her arms around my waist. I smiled and rested my hand on her head. I looked up to see the old woman, she looked at me with a displeased look. "Where were you?" I sighed and picked Stacy up holding her. "Just for a walk I didn't sleep last night, don't worry there was no one around." I walked over to the bed and sat down, I softly rubbed her back and smiled at her. "We're sage it's okay." She wiped at her red cheeks and sniffled. "I was scared you got taken or left us.." I frowned and hugged her tight. "No no I would never let that happen I promise." I looked over at the old woman. "Stacy you take the first shower." She nodded and slid off the bed and walked into the bathroom shutting the door. It wasn't until the water started running that my lecture began. "What we're you thinking?! We've only just got here and you wanna already make us leave? What if the containment was here? For Christ's sake what if something happened and you did something?" I rubbed my eyes, no sleep was already starting to catch up to me. "The town is small, we're far from the facility and they don't know where we would've gone. There was only one girl that's all." I defended. She narrowed her eyes and stepped closer. "A girl? Did you tell her your name? Did she see anything?" I groaned and rubbed my face. "She's just a random girl, we talked a little yes and she's friendly and seems like a good person. We don't have anything to worry about right now." We watched each other in silence. If looks could kill I'd have dropped dead now. "From now on you are not allowed to leave this room without me." I stood up. "Are you serious?! I have to be a prisoner here to?" I raised my voice. "We can't let our guard down! And that's exactly what you're doing, you could get us caught. You could put us all in danger because you wanna go for a little stroll." I clenched my jaw and tightened my fists. "So what I'm not allowed to try and be a normal person? You should put me in chains then, really sell the image that I'm your prisoner." She looked at me her eyes filled with an anger I'd never seen before. "This is why your stupid kind was wiped out! Because none of you think you only act out of your selfish needs!" The air was sucked out of the room. She slumped over and sat on the bed rubbing her face. I could hear the shower turn off and after a few more moments Stacy came out wrapped in a towel. Her wet hair was spiked in every direction and she ran up to me smiling. "The room is all steamy now! I drew a smiley face in the mirror, come see come see!" I forced a smile and walked into the bathroom seeing a crooked circle with two somewhat straight lines in it and a curve for a smile. "It looks very nice Stacy, imma take a shower now okay." She nodded and ran out and I could hear her talking to the old woman. I shut the door and locked it and turned the shower on. I stood there, I don't know how long but I just let the steam from the hot water wrap around me. My head felt heavy and glued to the ground. I reluctantly stripped and stepped into the water, it burned my skin but I didn't move to lower the heat. A knock on the door made me jump a little. "I'm bringing Stacy to get breakfast." I didn't feel like responding, I just nodded as if she could see me. I could hear the door open and close. I sat down in the shower alone with my thoughts. As the steam continued to fill the room the smiley face in the mirror slowly faded away.
