The man in his 40's smiled to his fullest as he cut the call.
"Anjali...Anjali..." He called his wife happily.
Narayan Murthy, an upper middle class bank employee, who follows each and every tradition that their family has adapted. Basically from South India but they have settled in Mumbai from past 2 generations.
"Jii...Aayi..." Anjali rushed from the kitchen answering her husband's call.
Anjali Murthy, wife of Narayan Murthy, home maker. Coming from an orthodox family herself, she got adapted to her husband's and his family traditions easily.
"Malhotra's will be coming tomorrow to see Nandini... Just now Naren ji confirmed..." Narayan said with a bright smile which transmitted to his wife's face as well.
"Where is Nandini...!?" He asked and she replied "Ji she is getting ready to office I think..."
Just then, their daughter came down, dressed up in a white and pink salwar, with her sling bag all set to leave.
"Good Morning Appa..." She wished with a smile.
Nandini Murthy, soon to be 24, finished her MCA and is working in a software company from last 6 months. It was against Narayan's family rules and traditions but Nandini pleaded and promised that she will not give him a chance to complain and will quit whenever they ask her to. Simple and calm going and incorporated all the qualities of being a good wife from her mother. Why won't she.! All her mother preached from the time she turned 18 was only about being a perfect housewife and respect elders, especially husband.
"Good morning Nandu...Beta...Tomorrow Malhotra family will be coming to see you..." Narayan informed which made her smile fall slowly.
"Appa...Just now I'm into the job aur abhi shaadi..." Nandini said in a slow tone as her words trailed off seeing the change of expression on her parents' face.
Anjali gulped seeing her husband glare at her and immediately said "Nandini... Don't argue with your Appa..."
"Maa...I'm not arguing...I'm just..." She tried to say but was cut off when Narayan roared "Bas...I don't want to hear anything...Nandini...If you have any problem with your job then just quit...Yaad hai na...You have promised...But kal yeh rishta pakka honi hi chahiye...whatever it is... Understood...!??"
"Jii" She said bending her head down and Anjali quickly replied "Ji...I will talk to her..."
He went to his room and Nandini looked at her mother with sorry eyes and she nodded her head and got her lunch box.
In the evening, Nandini came back from office and got freshen up when her mother came to her room.
"Maa..." She said and sat beside her on the bed while Anjali took her hand and said "Bacha...I know you are not ready for marriage but no girl will be all set to leave her family and get married...It will take time...Meet him tomorrow...Your appa was saying bahut acha rishta hai... Even I felt the same...See...He doesn't have parents...You don't have to deal with in-laws..."
She paused and then continued "Nandu...You were a kid when your Appa's mother passed away...Tujhe nahi patha what and all I have tolerated with my mother-in-law...Tumhe yeh sab nahi hoga...He is the eldest among the three brothers...They share a very great bond...You will have whole responsibility of the house as the elder daughter-in-law...Trust me it will be much better than handling in-laws...And he is a self made person...Khud ka company hai...very much settled family...aur unko jyada relatives bhi nahi hai...Bas unke mama ji hai...Even they won't stay in the same house..."
Nandini sighed hearing her mother and nodded in understanding while Anjali continued "Beta... It's not like we are forcing you...but it's just that acha rishta hai...Meet him...If possible, we will let you talk...If you find anything uncomfortable, let me know...But stay and think positive like you have to make this work...Your Appa wants this rishta at any cost...Please bacha..."
"Maa...Why are you pleading so much...!? I'll meet him...and if you both think it's a good match, I'm fine with it...Rishta pakka hi samjho aap...I'll be at my best..." Nandini assured making her mother sigh in relief.
"Thank you so much Nandu...Yeh le...Groom's photo...Details are at the back of the photo..." She said handing over the photograph to Nandini and left the room.
She went to see her husband and said "Jii wo maan gayi...You don't need to worry..."
Narayan glared at her and said in a strict tone "Dekho Anjali...I don't want this to repeat...She should know that she must not say against elder's words...especially husband's...What if she speaks like this in future...!? What will they think of our upbringing...!? Atleast now teach her that she shouldn't back answer and just accept whatever the man says..."
Anjali hung her head and nodded saying "Jii...I'll make her understand...Dobara aisa nahi hoga..."
"Hm...Go and check for food arrangements for tomorrow...Kuch chahiye toh tell me...I'll bring..." He said and she replied "Jii" before going back to her work.
Meanwhile Nandini sighed thinking about her mother's words and looked at the man in the photograph who is going to be her future. She smiled a little and turned it to see the details and read his name 'Manik Malhotra'
