The following days we tried to think of some strategies to prevent the firesworms from hitting Berk. We considered trying to split off some smaller groups from the swarm but that was pointless. The entire swarm would attack us and even if we did manage to separate some fireworms, they would return to the swarm. Instead we built as many catapults and artillery as we could. Me and gobber were day in and day out busy in the smith. We made sure that our dragons were well rested, we needed all of their fire power. Fishlegs gave Meatlug some rocks that gave him a few extra shots of fire instead of the regular six.
We were running out of fish and if all the crops would be destroyed, food was going to be a problem. We fortified a stable so our livestock would be saved and brought all excess food to the great hall.
Sweaty and exhausted, I went back home after a day in the smith. I walked straight to the stairs ready to crawl under my warm covers, when I saw my dad sitting frustrated at the table. I resisted the temptation to go to bed anyway and sat down opposite him. 'What's the matter dad? You should sleep. If it's the fireworms, there is nothing more we can do. With our preparations I think we're going to make it.'
Dad shook his head and took a deep breath. 'It's not just the fireworms. The tensions between us and the other villages are increasing. Some say we are exploiting the dragons, others say we are breaking sacred traditions.' Dad was silent for a moment. 'Then we have Inverness which attacked a small village in our archipelago and just in one day they managed to beat them. One day! And I don't think they will stop with only that Island.'
'What makes you think that? Maybe they had some fight over trading routes or something like that.'
'Hiccup, you should know why. They wiped them off the map in one day. Their army is huge. Why in Thor's name would you have such a big army if you aren't planning on using it?'
'Shit. But there are a few Islands between us and them. We should have some time if they are going to attack us. And even if they do, we have dragons.'
'Well, I don't think that we can defend against the damage that our village will take because of the fireworms. And then the last issue. There is a sickness in our livestock. If the fireworms burn our crops, we will starve.'
I didn't know what to say. If the fireworms would damage our crops, we would be completely f'cked. We had no other sources of food left except fishing miles away.
'We might be forced to use wild dragons to protect us.' Dad said eventually.
'What? No! We can't do that. We already discussed it.' I would not let that happen.
'So you'd rather have our entire village burned to the ground and all of our villagers starved to death?' My dad raised his voice.
'You can't know that for sure!'
'Well do you have a better idea because if not, I will use wild dragons to protect our people!'
'Oh no you won't , I won't allow it!' We both started yelling.
'You won't allow it? I'm the chief! You don't give the orders! If you don't come up with a better idea I will do it. And I won't let you stop me!' My dad was enraged but so was I. I just had enough self control to kick the table instead of my dad. I went upstairs and yelled: 'Don't you think for a second that you have more control over those dragons than I do!'
One day before impact. We were discussing all the plausible scenarios when Ruffnut showed off her storage of Zippleback gas she had gathered the last few days.
'Wait, we can extract extra Zippleback gas from wild Zipplebacks. We don't put them in danger. We don't need special storages, as long the gas stays in, our dragons can blow it up!' Fishlegs said.
