A rider

'Where are the twins?' I asked tiredly while I pressed my hand to my head. Everybody was ready for take off, but the twins were nowhere to be found.

'I'll have a look in their house. They're probably smashing their heads together or something.' Snotlout said and flew away.

'They're probably still sleeping.' Fishlegs said. A little later Snotlout returned with the twins.

'They were sleeping.' Snotlout said disappointed.

'I told you!' Fishlegs yelled and slapped himself on the forehead.

'Ruff, Tuff, from now on this will get serious. Don't fuck around.' Astrid said.

Ruffnut waved away the warning. 'Yeah yeah, let's go already, we were supposed to take off half an hour ago.' Ruffnut said.

'You are the reason that we're late!' Fishlegs formed claws with his hands.

'Wow, calm down Fishlegs. 'It's no big deal.' Tuffnut said with a disappointing look. Fishlegs took deep breaths and opened his mouth.

'So everyone is ready. Great! Let's go guys!' Emil said and took off.

'Yes, great idea!' I said and followed him before the three would start a fight. Fishlegs and the twins kept complaining in the sky, but quit when Astrid looked at them with her deadly gaze.

A few hours went by and had entered the unknown waters. We entered an area with spiky rocks sticking out of shallow water. Land should be close. In the distance appeared a small island around, ten monstrous nightmares long with a huge rock close to the center.

'Let's take a rest. We have flown for hours.' I yelled through the wind.

'Finally. Otherwise I would have taken one myself.' Snotlout said.

I took my notebook out of the inner pocket of my tunic and drew the location of this island. We did not have time to look around, so I had to return and have a look then. We landed close to the large rock. That would give us the most shelter from the wind.

Something moved in the corner of my eye. Deadly Nadder spikes flew through the air. Toothless jumped into the air, but the spikes pierced into his wing. He rolled behind a large rock for cover. The Nadder jumped out and fired more spikes towards Astrid who managed to dodge the attack by making a quick dive. The Nadder had a masked rider. I quickly looked around and realized all the others were hit as well.

Toothless started to succumb. 'It's dragon root!' Emil yelled.

Only Stormfly was still standing. She landed two spikes on the other Nadder and took off, waiting for her own dragon root to take effect. I jumped off Toothless and drew my sword. I looked around, it was only the nadder and her rider attacking us.

Astrid managed to dodge the spikes of the other Nadder. Astrid had a hard time dodging the spikes. Without the terrain she definitely would have gotten hit. It had been more than twenty seconds and the Nadder showed no signs of the dragon root working. He had to be immune. Was that even possible?

. Stormfly had to hit her spikes at the rider to win, while one spike from the enemy Nadder would be enough to stun Stormfly. She would not win that. A strike of fear rushed through my body by that realization. I had to do something. I ran towards the large rock and grabbed my container of Zippleback gas. With my sword I could activate it in the air, but the rider had to come low to the ground. Astrid was on full retreat and saw me with the Zippleback gas. She dived past me. With all my willpower I forced my hands to stop shaking for a second and threw the container in the air and my sword as the enemy flew past. 'Now, Astrid!' It exploded near the enemy. So close that it must have deafened him and blocked his sight. Stormfly had already turned around and shot a hail of spikes towards him. The Nadder reappeared out of the smoke with the rider unscaved. They managed to turn left during the explosion. In that one second he realized that he was vulnerable to the spikes. I collapsed to the ground. That was our only shot.

The turn Astrid made had slowed her down, making her vulnerable for an attack. I wanted to look away, but I couldn't. Tears started building up, a panic attack was ready to be released, but there came no spikes. Instead the Nadder turned around. Was he fleeing? I grabbed my spyglass. The rider slipped off the dragon and fell down. Had the explosion killed him? But the clothes weren't damaged. The Deadly Nadder caught him and flew off.

I pulled my sword out of the earth, put it in its sheath and turned towards Toothless. He was laying flat on the ground. The spike had left his body and the wound was small. "We're safe, bud.' I petted him over his head. He made a relieved growl. The dragon root would work out in ten minutes or so. The others were fine as well, no big wounds.

Astrid landed next to me and jumped off Stormfly.. We were almost captured, maybe dead. For whatever reason that weak explosion was enough to knock him out. We should have been done for. That idea... it ate away at me. That person wanted us gone and he knew what he was doing. This trap was smart. We had to be smarter.

After we calmed down a bit we gathered in a circle.

'This Deadly Nadder was immune to dragon root, just like the Screaming Deaths. That cannot be a coincidence. They should not be immune to it. He or a group where he's part of wants to get rid of us.' Fishlegs said.

'This is getting scary.' Ruffnut said, still keeping an eye at the sky in case of another attack.

'Way too scary. How did they even know we would be here?' Emil asked.

'Well I think it is safe to assume that the Screaming Deaths and this attack share a common enemy. They probably knew in what direction the Screaming Deaths flew and set a trap in that direction. We would never expect an attack on this island. There wasn't any more place to hide another dragon on this flat island so that could be why only one person attacked us, or maybe it is actually one person. It could be possible.' I said while avoiding eye contact.

'This is impossible. We know nothing about the enemy. It could be the dragon hunters. That would make the most sense.' Astrid said.

'That makes no sense. They hate dragons and this Nadder was loyal beyond enslavement. He chose to save his rider. And even if it were dragon hunters. How would they have control over ten Screaming Deaths?' Fishlegs said while shaking his head. I clenched my fists. We were fighting an uphill battle. We knew nothing about the enemy and the enemy seemed to know us all too well.

'But why was his dragon immune to dragon root? Does he have a way to make them immune or something?' Emil wondered.

'It sure seems like it.' Astrid said while she put her hands in her hair.

'So what do we do?' Snotout asked. I took a deep breath. What could we do?

'Well first let's get everything in a row. The enemy has dragon root immune dragons and a loyal dragon. They can train Screaming Deaths and control them somewhat without riders. We don't know who they are and where they could be and if they give us information it probably will be a trap.' I got more and more frustrated. 'We have to locate them before they can make another army and crush us, so we're on a clock. We probably have some time. The Screaming Death attack was probably their all in and now they have to rebuild. By Thor, I don't know what to do anymore!' I yelled and walked away.

Emil waited a bit so I could calm down and walked towards me. 'Let's go home, we can figure out what to do later.' He put his hand on my shoulder. I Looked towards the ocean and nodded.
