I'm in my own bed. We made it. How did I get here?
Then I remembered seeing Emil and Astrid. I put on some clothes and ran all the way to Isabelle while tears were streaming off my face.
'Where are Emil and Astrid?' I asked exhausted as I opened the door. Isabelle turned around.
'They are fine, they need to rest.' She turned around tried to shut the door.
'Is it bad?'
'I said they are fine.'
'How bad are the burns.' I said. Elise sighed.
'Why don't you sit down. You need to calm down.'
'How bad are the burns?' I said louder.
'Probably nothing permanent. It's their lungs that took the real damage. They will heal, they just need to rest. There is nothing you can do so please calm down.'
'Sorry, when can they leave?' My voice was calmer now but still shaked a little.
'They can leave this evening IF nothing changes.'
'I'll be here then. Is there a chance I can see them?'
'No, they might wake up. You can see them this evening. There is enough work to do in the meantime. You should go. I have enough to do as well in the upcoming days.'
Once outside I saw toothless waiting before the door. He stroked his head along my side and made some sweet soft noises. I pressed my head against his. 'I'm fine, thank you.' A tear slipped down my cheek. Toothless made a worried sound. 'Don't worry, I won't give up. We will get through this, bud.' My voice was soft and a little sad, but I meant what I said. It was hard to not be sad. 'Can you bring me to the other dragons, I want to know if they are fine.'
The dragons were in the stables. Barf and Belch, Hookfang and Meatlug were sleeping, but the Stormfly and Spikehead were walking nervously around. Spikehead saw me and jumped towards me, making panic-like noises. A second later Stormfly followed his example.
'Calm down, Astrid and Emil are fine.' I looked them in the eyes and talked calmly. They understood the message but kept moving nervously. They were exhausted and couldn't sleep. Toothless tried to calm them down, it worked a little, but they were still stressed. I wanted to stay with them for a bit longer but I didn't have the time. I gave them some fish and left.
Toothless wasn't exhausted. He didn't use up all his firepower and light furies were very durable. Flying at maximum speed isn't as exhausting for him as for other dragons.I was sitting at the table in my house. My dad had asked me to come with him. 'Hiccup, I need to know if you can help us out of this situation, because I know I can't. We're all out of food. All our sheep and yaks are sick, well except maybe six. We have one field of crops left of the seven we have, we will starve very soon. We can't trade with the other villages. They would notice we are all out of food. I'm also sure that most villages saw the fireworm swarm hitting Berk and Inverness will likely attack in five days or so if they want to and they probably will. We have no ammunition, we have nothing. I don't know what to do anymore.' My dad's voice broke. He looked down with his hands in his hair.
I wanted to comfort him but I didn't know what to say. After giving it some thought I said: 'We could train some dragons so we can fish at some other islands. The only issue is that we will need a lot of fish and that will take a lot of manpower. Our island's defenses will be very bad.' I hated to say these words. I hated to admit the horrible truth.
'We could also use those dragons to defend the island.' Dad said.
'No. I won't train them for that. Fishing won't hurt those dragons, but defending Berk, that is abusing them.' I said instantly.
'Son, listen.'
'No, I won't do it. You won't convince me. Now, when do you think they will set sail towards Berk?'
Dad grumbled. 'Today.'
'I'll fly to them and will try to convince them not to attack us.'
'No! They will pluck you out of the air. You won't convince them. They can't lose this fight so they wíll attack!'
'I have to try.'
'No! I said NO! Don't you...'
I cut him off. 'The others can train some dragons, I don't know when I'm back. If they refuse I'll make sure to slow them down.'
'You can't go alone! They will snipe you down! Hiccup I beg you!'
'We need the others here. I have a Nightfury. I have more range than most of their artillery and even if it can hit us, we can dodge it.' I jumped on toothless and flew off. I could hear my dad raging in the distance.
Their fleet would take four and a half days to reach us, me and toothless would do it in four hours. No dragon even came close.
At the port of Inverness were twenty warships, ten in length and two in width. The people were busy with preparing the boats for what seemed to be a war. Cannonballs, long range artillery, arrows, weapons and so on. It was very crowded, but they didn't see us because me and Toothless were standing behind a rock formation that almost entirely surrounded the island. Ideally I could speak to someone higher up without being in danger of being attacked. Artillery was the main issue, if they wanted to slice our throat we would just fly away.
We inspected the port for an hour. I had gotten a pretty good idea of who the people in charge were. Every ship seemed to have a kind of manager and those managers were getting orders from the captain.
The captain started walking all the way to the right side of the Island. We followed him behind the rock formation. He entered a pretty big house, bigger than most houses on Berk. It seemed like a house where someone powerful lived. Their chief perhaps, the house was too big for the common folk. The port couldn't see us so I decided to fly to the house from the right side so they wouldn't see us from the windows. I walked around the house, dodging the window's until I could hear two people talking.
'No, all our artillery, short and long range must be covered in dragonroot. Even though they have to rebuild, their dragons are still a major threat. We must take them down from long range or they will burn all of our ships to the ground in a few seconds.'
'Alright, I'll send ten extra men to get some extra dragonroot. It will delay our attack by an hour.'
'That doesn't matter. Even though they probably see our attack coming, what do they want to do in one hour? They're going down. Is everything else going as planned?'
'Pretty much. We have enough materials. Some ships turned out to be a bit damaged so we are repairing them.'
'Did you give our ship extra artillery?'
'Then our other ships won't have enough, chief.'
'So we don't have enough materials. Well I don't care, you better make sure our ship has extra artillery and you better manage that right now.'
'Yes sir.' I could hear his footsteps heading towards the front door.
'Toothless, stay here around the corner.' The man walked out the door and looked at me with big eyes.
'Who are you? You don't live in Inverness. Are you a spy? You better have an explanation for me boy.' He drew his sword.
'Whoa, calm down. I'm here to talk.' I said. 'I'm speaking in the name of my chief, Stoick the vast. I hope we can prevent a war.'
'Oh you are the most foolish child I have ever met in my entire life. You're going down.'
'Foolish? I guess you could say that, but I would think twice before making such accusations, Toothless?' Toothless appeared from behind the wall.
'Dragon rider. How foo..'
'Alright, I'm foolish, I get it, but now you are going to listen to me.' My voice switched from diplomatic to angry, 'You may think we are an easy target after the fireworms, but they didn't hit our village. With our dragons your fleet won't ever hit the coast. You better call it off or we will strike back. Burn each of your ships to ashes and your people along it. Then you also must not forget that if you send everything our way, one dragon can destroy your entire village.'
'You filthy little brat, I don't believe a word you say. HELP! DRAGON RIDERS ARE ON THIS ISLAND!' The man's voice was louder than I expected. A horn sounded in the distance and another one answered. It was from the port.
I don't want to hurt them but if I don't, our people will get hurt. If I can take him out of the picture...
'Shoot his leg!' I said. Toothless shot a plasma bolt. The man tried to dodge it but he didn't have a chance. He screamed and dropped his axe. I grabbed it and smacked him in the face with the flat side. 'We should leave.' I said. I jumped on toothless and he grabbed the captain. We flew over the village. I could have destroyed their foodstorages but that would hit the innocent people as well. Instead toothless destroyed the only two smiths the village had. The village started to run full of artillery so we had to flee. I couldn't destroy the ships. The artillery they had might be able to hit us.
