Back at WOOHP, Jerry had just finished briefing Spider-Woman and Captain Carter on the full details of the attack on the Arctic base. Luckily Selvig and his team had not been seriously injured, but there was no clue as to where the robot assailants had taken the Tesseract and their superspy captives.
"Whoever planned this knew what they were doing," said Jerry solemnly. "These robots were evidently designed and programmed to counter your powers and abilities. We're clearly dealing with no ordinary villain this time."
"If only I hadn't suggested we split up," sighed Spider-Woman, consumed with worry for her friends. "Maybe if we had all been together to fight those metal guys..."
"Then we'd likely have all been captured," pointed out Carter, giving Sam a reassuring smile. "Whoever these people are, they had this whole thing planned out well, and had surprise on their side too. We need to work out what their next objective will be. That might at least give us some clue as to what form our own course of action shall take."
Just then, Jerry's communication wallet began buzzing, and as he opened it, his face grew all the more serious.
"Oh my. It seems that the persons behind this are broadcasting a message all over the planet. I'll put it up on the screen."
Jerry pressed a button on his desk, and the next second, the large screen behind him sprung to life, displaying a large shot of the hideous form of MODOK, who was directly addressing the camera:
"Greetings, peoples of the world! I am MODOK, leader of Advanced Ideas Mechanics, and I hold the power of life and death over this entire planet! Through the ingenuity of AIM, we have acquired the Tesseract, a source of unlimited energy that we intend to use to bring this entire world to its knees! Unless your leaders surrender full dictatorial control to me, I shall proceed to obliterate every city on this globe, one by one, until you surrender! The first target will be the city of London, which will be eradicated six hours from now! You have that long to decide to take my threat seriously or not."
And with that, the message on the screen cut off, leaving everyone in the office staring in open-mouthed shock.
"This is majorly bad," Spider-Woman said at last.
"Indeed it is," concurred Jerry. "If this Modok chap has indeed got the Tesseract, he could cause incalculable amounts of mayhem."
"That's putting it mildly," said Carter, as she considered the situation. "If only we had some lead as to his base's location..."
Almost on cue to this remark, the computer on Jerry's desk gave off an urgent notification sound, and as he crossed to the screen, his face lit up with encouragement.
"Ah-ha! We've just picked up a distress signal from Wasp's compowder. She must have found a way to get through to us."
"That's great!" said Spider-Woman excitedly, relieved to hear that her teammates might still be alive. "So where's the signal coming from, Jerr?"
