"why?" his eyes widened slightly, and his hands searched for hers. "did I do something?"
"no," she said quietly, allowing him to lace her limp fingers through his own, "you didn't do anything."
She kept her face towards the floor so that she wouldn't risk eye contact. if she could see the sadness and confusion in his eyes at the moment, there was a good chance she'd open her mouth again and let slip that no, he hadn't done anything at all, but that that was the entire problem."
