The next Indie Horror fan game I've done takes place in the torturous world of Dark Deception, homed to souls of sinners taking the form of menacing nightmares. Escape and Rebel, A Dark Deception Story. To make it easy to understand, it's about some of Malak's nightmares who go against his orders and attempt to escape the torment themselves, starting with a young girl and focusing on the sought for freedom and the choices to be made. This is sort of the same thing as Doug Houser is going through with this insanity, but instead it revolves around a few fallen souls instead of him. So it's like an unexpected side story, like the Lion King 1 ½. The monsters still have their jumpscares on. So if they catch you, there will be screaming. Unlike Dark Deception though, it's also multiplayer, meaning you can play with friends. As the number of members of characters increases, more players can be available up to 4. You can even switch with another character whenever you want to, because some parts of each nightmare require a different ability.
Like my Bendy poor souls, the playable are my Dark Deception OCs, who have been dubbed the Killer Rebels by Malak himself. The whole thing starts with Masha, a young girl turned gold watcher, the central protagonist and leader of the Killer Rebels. Masha is in the same situation as Doug, attempting to escape this scary place and also did a horrible act. What she did is for you to find out. Even she doesn't remember what she's done. What's different is rather then just dying and given a 2nd chance, she becomes one of Malak's minions. She goes against him and attempts to escape, building up a team all working together in the process. That's how they were dubbed the Killer Rebels, because they're designed to kill and are rebelling against Malak in order to find freedom. The other members of this band of escapees are Drake the Dread Ducky, Tara the Reaper Nurse, Lazy the Cat of the Joy Joy Gang and Stuffy Scratch the Trigger Teddy. Here's a fun fact for you. One of the most well known voice actresses, Tara Strong herself, did the voice a few of the female characters in the game, including the Reaper Nurses as they gave off Harley Quinn vibes. Because of that, I named my OC after her in her honour. No one ever said Strong couldn't voice horror characters. Another fact is that Lazy is the embodiment of the sin of Sloth, like how Hangry is the embodiment of Gluttony and Lucky is the embodiment of Pride. I got that idea because that sin was missing from the nightmares. All the Rebels have different moves they use for combat and defence, like Masha's axe, Drake's inner mouth and legs, Tara's broken syringe and roller skates, Lazy's animal instincts, Stuffy's claws and explosions, the powers they manage to keep and their frenzy states which they're able to control. And I won't lie to you. Their battle with the Joy Joy Gang really takes the cake and its no sissy fight. Like the original game, this story contains questions and mysteries about the soul pawns' past before finding themselves here and dying and everything is eventually revealed. Masha and her friends all have their stories and over the course of the journey you learn why they are here.
Funny thing is, lots of horror games I've taken a look at either involved dealing with the devil and have humans turned monster or children at a young age experiencing abuse, neglect and childhood trauma. And I realise now that some of my Indie Horror OCs happen to be humans turned monsters, like I said before with characters already existing. I guess these horror games do have something in common, which would be trapped and tortured souls. This ends the horrific but fun games. Now let's see wat else we have.
