It wasn't much, but it was enough to tell you that he was grateful, too. And maybe even a little happy.

"To prepare for what's to come," coach Washijō spoke, loud and clear enough for it to echo through the gym, "we're going to a training camp next week. It's five full days but you must give it your all."

"Yes, sir!" the team, including you, chorused.

"Practice is over," the old coach announced and in a matter of seconds, the players scattered.

"Training camp?" you inquired, walking home with your cousin and Ushijima. Your father had promised to lock up after the last leavers so he let you go ahead.

"Yeah, it happens every year whether we make it to the Summer Interhigh National or not," Satori explained.

"We've always made it," Ushijima said, sounding confused.

"Yeah but all the other teams don't always make it and they go to the training camp anyway," Satori shrugged.

"What are the other teams?" you asked, narrowing your eyes.

"Kamomedai, Itachiyama, Inarizaki and us."

"Wow," you breathed, hearing the three names from your cousin. "I've heard of them. They're pretty strong, aren't they?"

"Yes, they are," Ushijima admitted. "We have lost to them quite a few times."

Satori visibly drooped. "Why are you so negative?" he dragged out.

"It's the truth."

"But it doesn't mean we'll lose this year, too," Satori whined.

"We might."

"And we might not," you added, interrupting the boys. "And by the way, sorry I wasn't able to play during the qualifiers. I wanted to but dad didn't let me."

"You were sick, right?" Ushijima asked.

You nodded.

"Then there's nothing to apologize for."
