One Day

I woke up early the next morning, before the sun had even started to come out. When I opened my eyes everything that happened last night came rushing back to me, immediately I sat up looking around finding myself alone once more in the church. Knowing I should get going I took my phone from my pocket and went to call the one person I knew I could trust. Just before I was going to click the call button I remembered something I'd heard from a friend, about police being able to track phone records to find people.

Thinking quick I remembered there was probably a phone in the office I got myself off of the pew, grabbing the gun from under my bag and stuffing it into my hoody pocket. I kept it there while I walked to the door that the pastor had come from, I gave a few gentle knocks on the door but there was no response. Hesitantly I opened the door and pushed it open, looking around as I entered the small office. There was nobody in there, lucky me. Closing the door behind me I went over to his desk and picked up the handset from it, putting it to the my ear before dialing my friend's number. I stood listening to the ringing for a few seconds until he picked up the phone. "Who is calling this phone this early in the morning? There'd better be a good reason." I couldn't help but smile a little hearing his reaction, knowing he'd be annoyed by my call.

I decided I was going to give as minimal of information as possible so he couldn't get in any trouble for helping me. "It's Jason, Vogel. I need a favor, and you're not allowed to ask any questions. You're the only one I can trust." There was a few seconds of silence after I said this.

"What is it do you need? Money? Backup? A getaway?"

"I need you to come get me, I'll tell you where to go when you get here." I could hear him getting out of bed on the other end as I told him what I needed.

"Your place?"

"No, don't go there. You know that big church around the corner from D's? I'm there."

"Alright I'll be right there, give me fifteen."

"Thank you." As I said this I set the phone down, ending the call. Before I went to get my things I went through and deleted the record of the call, having learned to do this on the home phone before they let me get a cellphone to not get caught. It wasn't fool proof but to the plain eye it'd look like it never happened. Being extra careful I grabbed a disinfectant wipe and wiped down the entire phone, making sure to do so before the fingerprints dried.

Even if they didn't have any reason to search here yet, I made sure to clean off everything I touched, just in case. Once I was done I went back to the nave of the church and began collecting my belongings. I neatly folded the blanket I'd been given, leaving it on the pew before grabbing my backpack again, throwing it over one shoulder. I walked back to the front of the church and began watching out the front of the church from a window just waiting for my friend to come.

It was another twenty minutes of waiting before I saw the old silver car pull up in front of the church. As soon as I saw it I stuck one hand in my pocket and put my hood up, walking to the front door and pulled it open with the sleeve of my jacket. Quickly I walked to the car keeping my head on a swivel as I went down the steps and got into his car, throwing my bag by my feet when I got inside. Even though it was still pitch black outside I couldn't be too careful. I waited until the door was closed before saying anything. "I need to go north, to the state border. That's all, where I need to get after that is up to me to figure out." without another word he put the car back into drive and pulled off.

"Figure I won't be seeing you for a while?"

"Probably not."

"Damn... what happened man?" I shook my head as he asked this knowing I couldn't tell him anything.
