Today was like any other weekend should be. Chilling with your siblings, eating a bunch of junk food, binge watching a show only you like and a portal randomly spawning in the middle of your living room.

     Wait, what?

"Uh, are y'all seeing this?" My brother asked, wiping his face littered with chip crumbs.

Our parents had gone on a weekend vacation (probably just to be as far away from us as possible) and we were home alone for a few days. Which was probably disastrous because I was probably one of the most irresponsible oldest siblings one could possibly get, but hey, I was working on it. Sort of.

I looked at my sister who looked utterly terrified. "Well, if Annabelle has stopped eating then we're surely not imagining this," I say, standing up and setting down my ice cream. Annabelle gained my habit of always snacking instead of meals.

Still letting the TV run the Rise of the TMNT (best show, by the way), I put my phone in my jean pockets and made a full lap around the portal to confirm my suspicion about the neon pink rectangle of light: this was definitely a portal. A weird one, though. There were strange symbols rotating around the edges. This better not summon some demonic creature.

"So what are we gonna do?"

I felt a grin creep its way onto my face and did a smooth 180 turn to my too-tall of a brother and quivering sister. "What we're gonna do, huh?" I pointed my finger at the glowing light, "Now that is screaming adventure. How often does a portal pop up into this world and three kids get a break from school?" Heaven knows how dry this world was and in need of a new reality.

My sister backed up a little bit. "But what if we end up in space? Or worse"

     I shrugged. "We won't."

     "How do you know that?"

     "Plot armor."

     "But what if-"

I groaned. "Okay, okay, enough with the 'what if's'. We'll only know if we see for ourselves..." I emphasize my point by doing a little showcase dance towards the hole in space. I glanced at my brother for support, but he shrugged, continuing his snacking montage. I face palmed but motioned them to go into the light. "C'mon, losers. I bet no time will pass when we get back."

"If we get back," Annabelle grumbled, but didn't argue any further.

"So we're just gonna jump into oblivion?" Braeden questioned, eating another face full of chips. I took one for myself too. "Bet."

Without warning, he dropped everything and took a running leap, disappearing into the now shrinking portal. I smiled with glee and grabbed Annabelle's wrist, dragging her to the portal to catch up with our brother. She hesitated, but I could see curiosity tipping her mental scale. For a twelve year old, she was incredibly mature. I reassured her one more time that nothing could possibly go wrong on the other side, and we leapt into the light, disappearing from our home.

But in reality, I was far from the truth.
