Donnie wasn't a leader.
Sure, he had the brains, skills, good looks and all the other possible characteristics to qualify under that category, but he never took action. Well, took action and assured his dominance over his brothers who probably wouldn't follow him in any circumstance.
For sixteen years, now, he'd been advancing further ahead in technology to limits that humans would probably never reach, but this never pushed him above his brother, the 'leader'. By leader, he meant Raphael: a completely untrained numbskull who barely passed the leader vibe. But Donnie and the others still accepted their bulkiest brother as their boss. He wanted to shudder at that single thought. Besides, no one wanted to hold responsibility for their siblings.
He never had thought once how big of an impact his brothers had on him. They were all immature, loud and chaotic (like him), but, although he would never admit it out loud, he still cared about them. And he would do anything to protect and save them.
And so when he saw the human girl fight and struggle for her what Donnie thought to be her brother and sister, he felt a pang in his chest to see her seemingly perky aura dissipate as her family was taken from her right before her eyes.
As the last of Baron Draxum's vines disappeared into the portal (Donnie noted to interrogate Leon about it later) he looked to the girl standing only a few feet in front of him, looking to the spot where the Baron had vanished, swaying in the light breeze, like a dead leaf about to snap and fall from the tree and to the ground.
"Uh, what just happened?" Mikey said, not fully registering what was just witnessed. They were all still comprehending that not only Liu Jitsu is their biological dad- to an extent- but also Draxum was their creator, or maker, or whatever the heck Donnie thought he was. He still didn't know what to think. All he knew was that this girl was lost and alone.
Leon took a step to the girl, hesitating on what the next course of action was. "Well I may not have made that portal like some of us would be thinking," he emphasized that 'some of us' towards Donnie, "but I don't think this is a normal walk in the park for a human."
"So what do we do?!" Cried Raph. "We just discovered who our father was, but now that human saw the whole show down and lost whoever those other two people were!"
"We take her with us," Donnie said abruptly, cutting off the rising panic in the other's conversation. They all stared at him like he was the only one out of his mind.
"...what?"
Donnie hurried to the girl who was now on the brink of consciousness, trying to shake her awake. "Hey, you need to wake up!"
"Donnie! What the heck are you doing?!" Said Raph, trying to pull him away, but it was too late. The girl finally fell unconscious, collapsing to the ground. Luckily, Donnie scooped her up in his arms with ease, not struggling in the slightest.
"Helping."
"Helping with what?!" Raph seemed on the brink of sanity. "She's a human!"
"And?"
They all stared at him in disbelief.
"And she could freak out and call-"
"Her family?" Leon butted in, still looking strangely at the girl. He had an expression that Donnie couldn't read. "Guys, that was her family. I don't know about y'all, but my mind is telling me she has nowhere to go. No one to talk to."
Mikey sniffed, his eyes watering. "That's, like, really sad. What is she going to do all alone and abandoned?"
They all turned towards Raph who seems to have been softened, even more so when he saw the girl's face pale and limp and Donnie's arms. He sighed aggressively, but then caved in.
"Fine. We go to the lair and ask for Splinter's permission first and then go from there, alright?"
They all cheered on actually agreeing on something, something totally illegal in their household, for once.
The turtles started their journey from New Jersey back to New York City, filled with excitement from the past few hours. As his brothers gossiped about how their father was Lou Jitsu, Donnie was solely focused on the mysterious girl slightly away back and forth in his arms.
He wasn't sure why, but he felt oddly protective over her, a sense of responsibility, one could put it. Which was strange, because he never felt this way about anything. Well, besides his technology and everything tech related, but this was new. Why was he feeling this way over a stranger? Why did he feel possessive over her and pulled her closer whenever Leon turned around to check on them?
Why did he feel a sense of triumph when he'd watch his brother turn away with a frown, knowing that this girl, whoever she was, was something that was forever going to change their lives?
