Jesse's eyes fluttered open to see a big, black sky filled with stars. He sat up and looked around, only then noticing it was night. He scrambled to his feet and began to dig, but a skeleton landed an arrow in his shoulder before he could dig a hole deep enough to climb into. He held the wound and attempted to back away from the skeleton, but it continued firing arrows. The next few missed, then one hit his ankle. He let out a pained yelp and fell to the ground. He was almost ready to accept that this was the extent of his life, until arrows came out of the shadows and killed the skeleton. Jesse began to feel woozy as a person ran over and knelt beside him. He was saying something, but Jesse couldn't tell what. Jesse took one last look up to see piercing, blue eyes looking back at him. He blacked out.

Jesse woke up to a sharp pain in his ankle and quickly opened his eyes to see what it was. There was a blonde boy with blue eyes sitting at the end of the bed, looking worried.
"Sorry, I know that hurt. I just wanted to get it over with fast," he said. Jesse then noticed a blood-covered arrow on the floor and an open wound on his ankle that the boy was putting pressure on.
"That was in me?" Jesse asked, gesturing to the arrow.
"Yeah, that skeleton got you good. Don't worry, the one in your shoulder isn't as deep." Jesse looked at his shoulder, which was already bandaged up under his shirt.
"So, who are you again?" Jesse asked.
"I'm Lukas. I spawned in a few weeks ago. You're one of the only other players I've seen, so I couldn't just leave you out there."
"Oh, well, thanks, " Jesse said with a bright smile. Lukas flashed him a dumb-looking smile back and took his hands off the wound, seeing that the bleeding had stopped. He picked up a cloth from beside him, and Jesse winced as he began cleaning the wound.
"What's your name?" Lukas asked.
"Jesse," he said through gritted teeth.
"Cool. Nice to meet ya, Jesse." Lukas stopped cleaning the wound and gave Jesse a concerned look. "I don't think you'll be able to walk on that for a while."
"What do I do until then?" Lukas smiled awkwardly.
"You can stay here. I have enough resources for both of us, and when you're better you can come with me to get more,"
"Wait, seriously?"
"Of course, where else would you go? I'm not just gonna feed you to the zombies." Jesse chuckled.
"Okay then, but I'm definitely gonna make it up to you when I'm better." Lukas stood up, and Jesse hadn't even noticed he'd finished bandaging the wound.
"Sounds good."

Jesse rolled over and opened his eyes to see Lukas asleep in a bed on the other side of the room. Jesse sat up and stretched upwards, looking out the window. It looked to be around noon.
"Wow, you slept through the entire night and half the day? How's that even possible?" Lukas said groggily with a smirk on his face.
"I'm injured. What's your excuse?" Jesse asked jokingly. Lukas chuckled.
"Hey, I was awake half the night organizing the resources so we both have an equal amount. I don't want you to go hungry."
"Can I have some of it right now? I, uh, still only have 4 hearts." Lukas shot up and began to raid a chest.
"Oh jeez, I totally forgot to give you any. I'm really sorry." He took out a stack of apples and handed them to Jesse, who smirked.
"Don't worry about it. Thanks." He ate one, then flopped back onto the bed.
"How're you feeling?" Lukas asked.
"Better, but I wish I could go outside."
"I'll see what I can do. I'll be back later," he said, getting up and putting his armour on.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm gonna gather some resources. I wanna try to craft something, but I don't have the stuff for it in here. Don't worry, I won't be gone long." Jesse raised an eyebrow.
"So, you're just gonna leave a stranger alone in your house with all your items?"
"Well, yeah. It's not like you're going anywhere," Lukas said, gesturing to the wound on Jesse's ankle. Jesse frowned, and Lukas walked over and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, you'll be better in no time. After that, we can go exploring together if you want. There's a jungle biome not too far from here." Jesse smiled.
"Why're you being so nice to me?" Lukas's stupid-looking smile appeared on his face again.
"Well, 'cause I hope we can eventually be friends. I was kinda lonely before you showed up. And since you'll be sticking around, we could even team up, if you want." Jesse smirked.
"What do you mean, 'eventually'? You saved my life, the least I can do is call you my friend." Lukas's dumb smile became even wider.
"Oh! Cool! I'd- Uh- b-better head out, I don't wanna be caught out at night. See ya soon." Lukas said while walking towards the door. He swung it open and flashed Jesse another smile before stepping out. Jesse flopped back onto his bed and smiled to himself.

Lukas opened the door to his house and peeked inside, seeing Jesse fast asleep again. He smiled to himself and went inside, closing the door behind him quietly. There was something on the floor next to Jesse's bed, he looked to have dropped it when he fell asleep. Lukas knelt and picked it up, seeing it was a book and quill. He opened it without thinking. There was a half-finished drawing of... him. The only part that was coloured were his eyes, which were extremely detailed. Jesse had clearly spent a lot of time on them. Lukas blushed, he thought the drawing looked better than he did in real life. He closed the book and put it in the chest next to Jesse's bed, then sat down on his own bed.
"Does my smile really look like that?" He muttered to himself.
