"Jesse?" Jesse opened his eyes to see Lukas looking down at him. "I have a surprise for you. Well, two surprises, but one of 'em's super cool." Jesse sat up and rubbed his eyes as Lukas took something out of a chest and hid it behind his back. Jesse raised an eyebrow, and Lukas revealed what he was holding. It was a cake.
"You went on that trek just to get stuff for a cake?" Jesse said, chuckling.
"Well, not exactly. Ready for the other surprise?" Lukas didn't even wait for Jesse to reply before pulling out two wooden crutches. "You can come exploring with me now!" Lukas gave the crutches to Jesse, then helped him up.
"Awesome! Can we go right now? I've really been itching to get out of that bed." Jesse asked, a big smile on his face.
"Sure, c'mon!" Lukas walked slowly out of the door to make sure Jesse wasn't too far behind. The wind hit Jesse's face as the door opened, then he took a step onto the bright green grass. He looked up at the sky, which was pure blue with the sun shining through some fluffy white clouds. Lukas looked back to see Jesse practically in awe. He smiled.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Jesse could only nod. "C'mon! I'll show you around the area." Jesse started walking, and Lukas walked slowly next to him as they approached a cluster of trees. Lukas watched Jesse with a smile on his face as he reacted to the scenery around him. Jesse stepped on something slightly wet and looked down to see a partly-dried puddle of blood soaked into the grass. He furrowed his eyebrows as Lukas noticed he'd stopped.
"Oh, this is where you spawned." Jesse frowned, his ankle stinging at the thought of what happened. "Y'okay? Does it hurt?"
"Um, a little. Thinking about it makes it worse." Lukas surveyed his surroundings, then spotted a small waterfall.
"Let's take a break over there," Lukas said. "Do you need help?" Jesse smiled.
"I got it." Jesse hobbled over and sat next to the waterfall, letting out a sigh of relief. Lukas sat down next to him.
"So, are there any other players here? You mentioned I'm one of the only ones you've seen," Jesse said.
"Oh yeah, I totally forgot to mention Petra. She spawned in a while before me. She lives on the other side of the jungle, but I haven't seen her in a while. Hey, maybe we could go visit once you're better?" Lukas suggested. Jesse smiled.
"Sure." They stayed quiet for a few minutes. "Uh, how'd you find her?"
"Well, technically, she found me. We were in the same cave and she thought I was a zombie so she almost shot me. She said if it wasn't for my bright blue eyes, she probably wouldn't have noticed I was a player." Jesse felt a twinge of annoyance while hearing the story, but he wasn't sure why.
"How come you built your houses so far apart?" Jesse asked.
"Well, she's kind of a loner. Plus, I liked the spot." Jesse smiled. The thought of building his own house crossed Jesse's mind, but the thought made him feel a bit hollow. He wasn't going to bring it up right now. "Wanna head back?"
"Yeah. It was nice just to get some fresh air for a few minutes," Jesse said with a smile. Lukas stood up and held out a hand, which Jesse took in an attempt to steady himself. He failed miserably and dropped one of his crutches, then fell into Lukas.
"Woah, you okay?"
"Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to fall on you," Jesse said through laughter. He reached down and picked up the other crutch as Lukas blushed.
"Heh, no problem. You're not that heavy." Jesse raised an eyebrow.
"I don't know whether to take that as a compliment or an insult."
"Um, maybe a bit of both?"

Lightning struck outside the window as Jesse flinched. He hugged himself and tried to control his breathing, and just when he was starting to calm down, lightning struck again. He got up and nudged a sleeping Lukas, not really knowing what he was expecting him to do. Lukas's eyes fluttered open and he sat up.
"Y'okay?"
"Um, I-I couldn't sleep?" It came out sounding more like a question, and Lukas didn't look convinced. Lukas was about to say something, but lightning struck again, making Jesse yelp. Lukas realized what was going on, and tried his best to be comforting without embarrassing Jesse.
"Want me to stay up with you?"
"Um, if you don't mind?" Lukas smiled sincerely.
"'Course not. Come sit down." Jesse practically jumped in beside Lukas, hugging his knees.
"Hey, know what I just remembered?"
"What?"
"I still have that cake," Lukas said, pulling it out of his inventory. "Now's the perfect time to share it! We could have like a slumber party." Jesse chuckled, feeling less tense already.
"Sounds fun. Sure."

Jesse laughed hysterically while Lukas sat with his arms crossed and a blush on his face.
"You- You shoulda seen the look on your face!" Jesse said through tears.
"I was scared! You did that on purpose, you know it's scary at night."
"Whatever you say, tough guy," Jesse said, punching Lukas on the shoulder.
"I'm totally gonna get you back," Lukas muttered.
"Oh, yeah?" Jesse said, leaning forward. Lukas's eyes widened and his blush deepened. "I'd like to see you try."
