"Love can either go one way or both ways"

——

I handed my jacket to the maid as I strolled inside, the mansion was quiet which was very unusual. I looked around trying to find my father, I looked inside the kitchen and frowned when I could not see him.

"Oh dear Lord, Kel. You scared me." I turned around seeing my mother, she had her hand on her chest. She was surprised by my reappearance, I decided I had stayed over at Ariel's for a bit too long and needed to come back home.

"I'm sorry mother, for startling you." I said placing my hand bag on the counter before opening the fridge and grabbing a carton of orange juice.

"Actually, I should be the one apologising. I had spoken to you so harshly that you had left, it's just seeing Kate after so long I fear she would disappear in an instant." I looked at my mother she her eyes filled with tears, a frown on her lips as she approached me. I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her.

"You don't need to apologies, mother. I understand." I said before pulling away giving her a small smile. She nodded her head wiping her fallen tears with the back of her hand.

"It feels so good to have my whole family, I have craved this moment for so long. Seeing my two daughters together." She said, I smiled at her but on the inside I did not trust Katherine, something was not fitting right about her and I was hell bent on finding out.

"I'm sure it does. Where is father?" I asked, it was just that moment I heard chatting before father came into my view with Katherine beside him smiling widely, I stared at her.
"They here is, Kate has decided to work at your father's company. How was your first day?" Mother said before turning to look at Katherine and asking her.

"It was really nice, better than being trapped in a room. I was able to work with different departments, father said it would help identify which department would suit me the best."she told my mother before continuing on talking about her day, I had zoned out after she began talking about different departments. I filled my glass and began to sip on it.

"Me and Damien have decided to give us another shot." I announced out of the blue silencing everyone, my eyes stared at Katherine waiting to see her reaction but to my dismay she never showed any emotions.

"I'm so happy for you, sweetie." Mother said approaching me as she wrapped her arms around me, I gave her a smile and father did the same. I waited for Katherine to approach me but she never did she just held a neutral expression standing where she was.

"Katherine, are you not going to hug me?" I asked, with my eyebrows arched she gave me a small smile as she approached me.
"Of course, sister. After all your wedding did get ruined because of me, I do not want to upset you any further." It was the way she spoke that made me think if she held double meaning to her words. She hugged me which I returned before pulling away.

I made my way to my room, trying to find my charger but I could not. I decided to check Katherine's room, I made my way towards her bedroom I knew she was downstairs so I did not bother to knock. I looked around for a spare charge which I could borrow. I approached her wardrobe, opening the drawers but frowned when I did not find any charger.

Deciding to look under the bed, I approached her bed before crouching down looking under and narrowed my eyes when I found a plastic bag. I grabbed it and untangled the knot, before pulling out which I assumed to be a boot.

"Why does she have a boot under her bed?" I thought mutter to my self, I looked at the boot before my eyes fell on the mud which was on the bottom. I touched it to see if it was fresh and indeed my suspicion had been proven correct.

"Where did she go?" I thought to myself, before placing the boot back inside the bag and tying it back up and placing it under her bed. My mind went back to the forest, where I had thought someone was staring at us.

Could it be?

Suddenly the door opened and Katherine walked inside, she froze as she saw me. Her eyebrows arched.
"What are you doing here?" She asked as she looked around, I gave her a small smile.
"I came here looking for a charger, I can't seem to find mine. Can I borrow yours?" I asked, she nodded her head approaching her nightstand drawer before pulling out her charger and handing it to me.

I thanked her before leaving her room, my thoughts were filled with the mud on her boots. I decided it was best to ask during dinner. I waited till dinner was served, father sat beside me whilst Katherine and mother sat opposite us.

"Did you guys do anything whilst I was away?" I asked looking around, my mother was the one to answer.
"Not really, except the fact me and Katherine had gone to the grocery store." I nodded my head at her, father shook his head letting me know he had been at work and at home.

"How about you Katherine?" I asked making her freeze, she lifted her head to look at me. Before she shook her head.
"As mother said, we have been just at home and only went to the grocery store." She responded back, this only made my suspicion on her grow. She had obviously been out or the mud on her boot would have not been there.

"Very well, I was meaning to ask if I could borrow any boots. My legs are killing in these heels." I said she seemed to stiffen at my words before giving me a half smile.
"Sorry sister, I don't have any boots." I nodded my head at her words before looking down and playing with the grilled chicken and pasta in front of me. She was lying. But why?
