The faeries held their breath as Haku closed his eyes on the balcony of the palace and cast his magic on the land. Slowly, the sea levels lowered, as if it were sucked by a huge drainage pipe underneath. Evira felt herself lower with the sea, which left marks of their invisible hands on her wet skin and clothes.
A heavy blanket of death slithered through the green like a snake, pouncing on every plant and leaving only its remains. Plants were uprooted, houses were flooded and struggling sea creatures on the floor opened and closed their mouths gasped for water pathetically.
Her dragon took its chance to jump at the struggling sea creatures, gulping down their remains and tearing their flesh with its teeth. Evira forced herself to look away at the palace - it was the most ancient building there, a cylinder building of white stone adorned with a golden-plated clock atop the palace steps. This was linked to two other smaller buildings, one on either side, so that the palace looked like it was spreading its wings.
Haku's reflection could be seen in the mirrors that interrupted the long breath of the white stone. They were massive arches sunk into the marble held up by designs of protruding dragons. Underneath the dragon of twin dragons spitting fire, Haku opened his eyes and the world shivered and glowed.
It was the first time Evira saw his grey eyes burn gold. She held her breath as all the colour in the lands flew into the safety of his eyes, as if it were a magnet.
"The magic of spirits," she whispered to herself as the flowers perked up from the dead and the sea creatures returned to their homes above. The dragons snarled as their foods were stripped before them, following the sea creatures to the air but unable to follow them into the water.
"That's the Prince, alright," Alys gushed beside her.
Evira raised her eyebrows.
Alys added, " People say he's the cruelest prince after his father, but you can't deny his strength."
Cruelest?
She hadn't yet seen that side of him back in the Human Realm, nor in the dinner just the night before. It was most likely a harmless rumour spread about him.
"How so?" Evira tried to hide her surprise.
"Well, apparently he's the one who killed his own father 100 years ago," Alys murmured in a deep voice.
"What?"
Alys' perfectly crafted eyebrows raised, causing her forehead to crinkle from the effort. "You were there, weren't you? Surely your memory can't be that bad," she teased.
Evira's cheeks reddened. "Haku didn't kill the King. He was with me the whole time," she answered, trying to keep her voice reasoned.
How could it be Haku, if he was the one who brought her to the mortal realm and never left her side?
Sneaking a glance at the white haired atop the palace balcony, Evira gave out a shaky breath. His golden eyes were focused, as serious as a hawk as it searched for danger. But under those long lashes, he was skinny - just a boy, a toy someone forced a crown on for entertainment.
Someone was framing him - and that someone was behind the whole awakening of the demon god. Her lips pursed together as she recalled a blurred face with blood splattered carelessly on her cheeks and silk dress pressing her heels onto the King's face. She remembered how the face slowly turned towards Evira. She remembered her fingers dragging across her left eye, a pain so pressing Evira subconsciously followed the deep trail of nightmares down her eye.
She gave a futile attempt to keep her voice cool. "It might just be a fake rumour," she said as she picked up the ring from her pocket and slipped it back on her finger. She guessed it may have looked weird, seeing as her ring was invisible to everyone apart from her.
