i wake up to the sun shining through my window. i turn over and pull my blankets over my head, groaning.

i lay there for a couple minutes before sticking my head out from under my covers. i take a deep breath and look around at my room. the sun beams shine across my bed and the carpeted floor, highlighting the dust particles lazily drifting through the air.

i hear a soft knock on my door.

"come in!" i call out.

the servant from yesterday, karl, walks in. he bows and holds out a tray of food. "i have your breakfast."

"oh, thank you karl."

he smiles and walks over to me, setting the tray on my bedside table. he opens the curtains to let the sunlight in.

"what would you like to wear today prince?" he asks opening my closet. he is greeted with empty shelves and looks shocked.

"uh, yeah. my clothes are in dream's room actually," i say awkwardly.

"sorry. would you like those in here? i can have them moved."

"no thank you."

he looks confused for a moment, before wiping the expression and replacing it with a professional one. "would you like me to grab you something? or is there anything else i can get for you?" he clasps his hands in front of him.

"i can get my clothes thanks. do you know if dream is awake?"

karl pauses, thinking. "i'm sure he is. he is usually up at this hour. would you like me to get him for you?"

"no, no. that's alright."

karl waits for anything else.

"what am i doing today?" i ask, pulling the tray into my lap and observing the food, stuffing a bagel into my mouth.

"we are celebrating your safe arrival today. you just need to show up. prince dream has requested you be at a speech in an hour, and after that, the whole town will be eating food, playing games and music." karl shifts his hands so they rest behind his back and rocks on his heels. "you may do whatever you like afterwards, although prince dream mentioned meeting guests and being present at the ball, among other things."

i sigh. that sounded a little overwhelming. not that i didn't want a celebration. i love music and dancing, i think, and i'm sure it will be a very enjoyable experience. i just don't know anyone. it makes me nervous.

"thanks karl."

he nods and takes his leave.

i quickly finish my breakfast and head across the hall to dream's room. i knock and hear a muffled, "yes?"

i slowly open the door and see dream at his desk, writing furiously.

"it's me," i say with a wave.

he looks up and smiles. "george. did you sleep alright?"

once again, the way he says my name makes my heart palpitate strangely.

i quirk my lips upward and enter the room, shutting the door behind me.

"i slept great. best sleep i've had for 2 years."

dream tries to laugh and fails.

bad joke.

"er, sorry. did you sleep okay?"

he collects himself quickly and smiles. "yeah. it was alright. did karl get you up to date on everything?"

"yeah. thanks. i'm actually here to get some clothes," i admit.

"oh, sure." dream gets up from his chair.
