halfway through the night the crowd started a dance, "for the royals". people circled around a group of couples who had practiced a dance to perform for dream and i.

it was a beautiful waltz, something i had never seen before, well at least from what i could remember. for all i know, i once knew this dance by heart. after that they played another song similar to the waltz and everyone began slow dancing around the large room.

dream tapped my shoulder gently and i looked at him. he was standing over me with a hand outstretched to me.

"would you like to dance?"

i look up at him with uncertainty. "i don't really remember how..."

"i'll show you. don't worry." he smiles earnestly.

i hesitantly take his hand and he leads me onto the dance floor. people part to make room for us. dream turns to me and pulls me in by my waist. he moves my hand to his upper arm, my other hand was in his.

he showed me how to move my feet and soon enough we were moving gracefully across the dance floor. it was difficult to move around with our capes trailing behind us. after finally getting the hang of it, i look up from my feet. dream is already gazing down at me.

something in me sparks and i find myself no longer having to focus on my dancing. we are completely in unison as we gaze at each other. it feels like the music and the crowd fades into the back of my mind. only dream and i are in this ballroom, in this moment.

and then the song ends.

we slow to a stop as the crowd applauds. the clapping feels faint and in the background. until dream's hand slips from my waist and he moves away to bow. i follow his actions and he leads me back to our seats.

the music resumes.

dreams hand slides from mine as he sits down. my hand suddenly feels cold, and i wrap it in my own fingers on my lap.

i lean over so my mouth is near dreams ear as i mutter, "thank you for dancing with me."

he looks over and suddenly our faces seem very close. dream's gaze slips to my lips and i quickly move back to my seat.

his lips part. "you're welcome."

after another hour of enjoying the company of the little town and their lively energy, dream announces that we would be leaving, but to 'continue the party all night long'.

he pulls me from my seat and we walk out together. the music is muffled from the doors closing behind us.

i unintentionally let a long sigh slip from my lips. dream gives a low chuckle. "you look tired."

"i am tired," i say, looking over at dreams face as it quirks into amusement.

"well, you're welcome." he says matter-of-fact like. when confusion crosses my features he clarifies. "for leaving early."

i nod my head and look down at my boots stepping lightly across the carpeted floors. dream's hand is still loosely wrapped in mine, swinging slowly in sync with our steps. i only notice now how my hand is completely enveloped in his much larger one. my hands look tiny compared to his.

"are we going to bed then?" i ask looking back up at his curious eyes.

"we can do whatever we want. or you can go to bed. or we can go to bed?" dream tests out the last sentence with caution. i can sense it in his tone.

"or we can do something else. just us?" he quickly covers.

we turn a corner and my hand falls from dream's grip. he stops to look at me.
