See, Osamu 'threatening' to call his parents and have him stay at the Miya household wasn't even near to a threat. He'd much rather get into a scuffle with the blond twin than stay home but being eager about it would most definitely raise eyebrows. He didn't need Osamu to worry about him─ besides getting him to eat─ and he could manage home life by himself. It wasn't new anyways.
But sometimes, home was too much and he'd casually suggest a sleepover with the twins or a study session that would 'accidentally' end up going later than planned which meant he had an excuse to sleep in Osamu's bed as deeply as he wanted and feel safe.
Normally, Rintarou was a light sleeper, weary that one of his parents would burst into his room and begin yelling at him. He'd normally get up and head to the bathroom the moment he heard one of them shift much too aggressively in their room. But with Osamu, oh hell, but with Osamu, he could sleep like never before.
He could sleep until late, sprawled across his section of the bed that was hardly big enough for even one, legs tangled with Osamu's and even though they were more than squished, he was happy.
Happy because even though Atsumu would make gagging sounds at them, he knew that he didn't even have to move a hand because Osamu would deal with his twin, he didn't have to wake up early because when he did, it was Osamu gently poking his cheek and telling him to wash himself up because he had cooked him an unhealthy breakfast of pancakes with all the syrup he wanted, and he was especially happy because he felt like he belonged, at home and Mama and Papa Miya made sure of that.
Osamu took care of him more than anyone had ever.
That's why when he woke up early as hell on a Saturday morning and wasn't met with Osamu's grin but instead Atsumu's stupid face─ in his defence, he personally thought they didn't look anything alike─ he knew that the reassuring weight of Osamu's leg over his ones would disappear in moments because that's the only reason the blond would wake him and he had no intentions to wake his best friend to get the blond away.
"The fuck? Why're you waking me up?" Rintarou snapped groggily.
"Choose. Either ya help me catch the woodpecker that rips my ears every mornin' at seven, don't worry its only half past six so it's not that early, or, ya go on a run with me," Atsumu explained as if any of both options were delightful but he knew which of the two would reluctantly be picked. That's why he chose them.
"The hell? None," Rintarou scoffed, turning his head to nuzzle it into Osamu's bare shoulder.
"Fine. I'm tellin' 'im about the time I heard ya gaspin' and repeatin' his name in yer sleep in the middle of the night. What a shame if he 'accidentally' found out about yer little, not so little crush."
And Atsumu smirked because victory was his.
So that's how Rintarou found himself on the Miya's roof at fifteen to seven on a Saturday, ever grateful his best friend was a deep sleeper until his internal clock woke him a little past seven.
"So, we wait?" Rintarou asked slowly, unsure how they'd catch a woodpecker anyway and why this was the first time he heard about it.
"Precisely."
So they sat in silence for ten minutes, Rintarou taking a seat as he sleepily looked at the empty street. The sun wasn't that hot yet but it was starting and Rintarou rather be anywhere than there.
Well, except at home.
But then the time dragged by, Atsumu lay on the roof staring at the sky with a stupid smile and there was no sign of a woodpecker. He could've been in Osamu's bed, all snuggled up and peacefully asleep but no. Suna Rintarou was with his least favourite twin all for the sake of keeping a secret. He wouldn't even mind being out there so early, only if he was with the other twin, but it was getting hotter and even the thought of being out there with Osamu instead of Atsumu was getting less and less appealing.
"When's it gonna come?" Rintarou finally asked, snapping Atsumu out of his stupid grin.
"Huh?"
"The woodpecker, idiot."
"Oh. There's none. Just wanted ya ta have an early start."
Oh. That's why he'd never heard about the woodpecker before.
BECAUSE FUCKING ATSUMU WAS A LYING BITCH!
"WHAT?!" Rintarou yelled, getting up immediately and yanking Atsumu to his feet. "I COULD'VE BEEN SLEEPING WITH YOUR BROTHER!"
Yeah, it came out sounding wrong but no one cared because everyone assumed they were a little more than friends already and yeah, everyone knew the two on the roof weren't the best pair to leave alone. So when Rintarou kicked Atsumu in the ribs, it wasn't with surprise that the force put behind the rather personal blow was enough to send Atsumu stumbling backwards.
And off the roof.
A loud crash followed a second after, Rintarou not having a smidge of regret in him for possibly committing the murder of his sworn 'archnemesis.'
"THE HELL WAS THAT?! RIN?! TSUMU?!" A groggy-sounding Osamu yelled and not a minute later he was standing outside with a shirt thrown on backwards, eyes staring in puzzlement at his twin who lay in the dumpster before looking upwards to see Rintarou.
"Control your dog," Rintarou hissed with a scowl, heading over to the edge and swinging his legs off.
"Entirely Tsumu, I assume," the silver-haired twin sighed, heading directly under his best friend to help him down.
"Obviously."
And turned out, it so happened to be a final goodbye prank which soured them, Rintarou especially because Osamu was going to a different college than him and Atsumu.
It was sad but his troubles remained within because at least Osamu was pursuing what he loved and he'd always support his best friend's decisions.
