"Oi, Sunarin, I have an idea," Atsumu commented one day as they sat on the same picnic bench, both on opposite sides far away from each other lest they start a fight that wouldn't be able to be separated unless Osamu was there.
"No."
"Come on! Yer gonna love it!"
"No."
Rintarou was determined to avoid whatever shit Atsumu had planned.
"I'm tellin' Samu about y'know what."
"Then I'm telling Kiyoomi about your crush," Rintarou smiled smugly, proud that not only was he given permission to use first name basis but also had a one-up against the blond.
But that smugness was wiped away the moment he noticed Atsumu with a look much smugger than he could possibly display.
"Well, I sure hope ya put in good word. Will fuel our date next week."
And that's how Rintarou realized he had lost and there was no way out now.
._._.
Rintarou wanted to die.
Having Osamu find out almost seemed like the better option.
"Hello, Samu!" Atsumu greeted, staring at his phone that was in recording mode on the table. "Today I’ll be makin' yer best friend taste food that I’ve prepared!"
Rintarou groaned, this head falling to the table with a loud thump.
"Samu, please save me! Your stupid brother wants me to die!"
But it was a video and the pleas would be heard until after he suffered.
Pineapples, cucumbers, peppers, onions, pumpkin, ginger, and just about every other food and flavour despised by the sulking black-haired were placed on the table to enter his digestive system. Rintarou swore he'd begin preparing his casket because all he could do during the time was hold in his puke and suffer. Not even Osamu made him suffer that much!
"Ya wouldn't believe what I did ta make him agree ta this!" Atsumu snickered once Rintarou leaned under the table at the end of the torture, possibly puking out everything, in all honesty. "Samu, yer gonna have a field day when ya find out!"
The blond was about to say something else, his mouth had already begun to open when half a watermelon was lunged at his head and the video was cut off right after spotting Rintarou aggressively get out his chair.
Osamu was not impressed, to say the least. Once he responded, the first thing he did was swear to beat his twin and then made sure his best friend was okay. Atsumu had promised Rintarou was still alive and even then, the black-haired used his best friend status to beg his favourite twin to punch Atsumu the next time they saw each other
Then the date between Atsumu and Kiyoomi happened.
Unfortunately for Rintarou, he was left alone at least thrice a week, which was thrice a week more than before. Before Atsumu somehow managed to bag Kiyoomi of all people. So with those two days lonely, he used them to do a number of things.
One, procrastinate on homework.
Two, be pissed at the blond for stealing his new friend.
Three, depressingly speed eat his snacks.
Four, cry like a baby.
Five, stare stupidly at him and Osamu's pictures on his phone and long for him.
He hadn't seen his best friend in very near to three months and he thought he was going mentally insane from lack of serious comfort. Once again he was starting to feel like a shadow and no matter how nice Kiyoomi was to him, it didn't compare to who he had come to find as his comfort. He wasn't being abandoned by Kiyoomi but those four of seven days with him weren’t enough to cure his loneliness. And the worst part? His parents were on his back about the grades they pretended to care about which resulted in a six; wishing his parents cared more about him than just the grades.
Wishing that the, 'Mom and Dad Love You!' engraved on his keychain meant something. Wishing that one, at least one more, gift would be given to him that showed they cared about their son although it wasn't evident in action. That they cared about the son they raised and had seemingly loved, the one that had lived his life trying to make them proud but given up after a certain age, realizing that no matter how hard he tried, it was never enough. Never enough for them but then there was Osamu, the one who had seen him, smiled, and said that they’d go through life together.
But he did get his gift. Just not in the way he expected it, or wanted it to be.
Life had been going well except for the here's and there's. Too well. So when he received a call at minutes past five in the morning on a day that would be filled with tests, he took a full hour to process what had been announced in his ear without a care.
"Your mother and I are moving countries. We sold the house and all your things are at your grandma’s house. Get them within this week or they’re getting thrown," Rintarou's Father had started. Not even a 'good morning’ to start the day. "You're gonna have to work to pay for school now and you better tell the twins none of this, understood?"
But he couldn't even answer before the call was cut off. He stayed in a daze, unsure if he was dreaming or if it was reality but when he felt his nose burn, he realized he was, in fact, in real life.
That was when he made his way to Kiyoomi's room minutes to six on a fine morning, crawling into his friends' arms because although he was nothing like Osamu, it'd work.
His presence woke Kiyoomi with a start, eyes opening in surprise before face softening and just accepting the hug Rintarou wanted. He'd be there even if he never knew what was going on. He’d be there during the times he had a free period and there to tell Rintarou’s professors that he was feeling sick and wouldn’t be able to do the tests. Kiyoomi would be his support when he was in silence.
