Students gathered at the National Aviary, all wearing identical school uniforms. Ellie wore her long blonde hair down her chest, contrasting from the dark green color of her uniform, her smile was like the sun, everything about her reminded Kendall of Chloe when they first met.
Throughout the tour Sebastian remained a few steps behind, smiling at his little sister clinging to Kendall, like she has just found a big sister, even happier seeing Kendall wearing the Tiffany bracelet.
By lunch all the students were called to the diner, Kendall finally got a break, went outside and took a breath of fresh.
"She likes you." Sebastian showed up beside her.
"She's a smart girl." Kendall nodded, wasn't sure how else to respond.
"She has been talking about you all week."
"She has?"
"She always wanted a sister."
"Do you see me as a sister too?" Kendall blushed, cursing herself for thinking out loud.
"No. When I see you. I see a brave girl with a heart of gold. You deserve better."
"Better of what?"
Kendall held her breath, her heart pounding, wondering what he meant.
"How are you doing in school, Kendall?"
"What?"
"How's your GPA? Your mother said you make good grades?"
"What kind of question is that??" Kendall thought out loud again.
"Because if you're doing well, my father can transfer you to my school, we can see each other every day."
"Shady Side? No way! In no way we can afford that!" she laughed. "And please don't believe everything my Mom says."
"My parents can handle the expense, all you have to do is say yes."
"But we're... so far away!" by class...
"We can rent a flat for you. You saved Ellie, we owe you that much." Sebastian looked in her eyes.
Being stared at by those sincere eyes was enough to melt Kendall's heart, but her brain was racing. She has a boyfriend, has school and has a running show, she couldn't just drop everything and move into a new life, especially one so rich she couldn't carry out a proper conversation.
"Ellie." she needed an escape route. "I want to see if she's all right."
She turned away from Sebastian, went through the door and into the diner, Ellie was nowhere to be seen.
"Excuse me." she grabbed a teacher. "Have you seen Ellie? Seven years old, long blonde hair about this tall?" she measured with her hand.
"I think I saw her went to the restroom."
Passing Sebastian, Kendall went across the hall and into the lady's room, it was empty. She came out again, scanning at every direction, through the glass wall she saw two adults shoving a little green figure into a car out the parking lot.
"Ellie!" Kendall turned to Sebastian. "Keys! I need the keys to your car!"
Sebastian handed over the keys without questioning, the two quickly ran out the parking lot and jumped into the vintage Porsche.
Driving the Porsche, Kendall took out her phone and dialed for Detective Kelly, the line was engaged, so she switched to voice mail.
"Detective Kelly! I'm in pursuit of a white Ford Fiesta heading south from the Aviary! They've taken Ellie! Again!"
They chased the white Ford into a narrow gravel road, it was inside the woods surrounding the Aviary, with tall trees lining up on either side. Suddenly a black pickup truck pulled out between the trees, blocking their path towards the white Ford.
Kendall shifted to reverse, backing the car to make a turn, this time a van pulled out from behind, trapping the Porsche in the middle of the gravel road.
"Oh No! It's a trap!" Kendall dreaded, dialing the Detective's number again, the line was still engaged.
A man got out from the pickup and walking towards them, his hand was holding a gun. Looking back, two more men came out of the van, they were both armed too.
"Detective Kelly!" Kendall recorded another message. "Sebastian and I are trapped in the Aviary park! We see three men, all armed, from a black pickup truck and a white van..."
Her message was held by a gun to her face, the man from the pickup truck reached in and grabbed her phone, threw it to the ground and crushed it under his boot.
"Sebastian." said Kendall raising her hands, never dreamed of saying the line herself. "Listen to me very careful!"
