Zak's POV

The next couple weeks go by and everything with Shawn was perfect. As much as I didn't want to notice, she was getting sicker. Everyday. Every minute. She's thin and pale, but still Shawn. She is still the woman I fell in love with. I couldn't help but wonder how much longer this Earth would give me with her. She didn't know this, but every night after she went to sleep I would go out on the hotel room balcony and just pray, hope, make a wish to a shooting star somewhere, anything, that she could just stay.

It didn't seem fair. She was too young. I had finally found my soulmate and she would soon be taken from me. I watch her now on our hotel bed sleeping just feeling so lucky to know her. So lucky to love her. She's so beautiful. The way her long, wavy dark hair falls down over her shoulder...beautiful.

"Zak?" Shawn calls out pulling me out of my trance.

"Yeah, babe."

"You do realize you were staring at me, right?"

"I was..." I walk over to the bed. "And I will every moment I can."

"I love you...hubby," she giggles hiding her face in the pillow.

It was odd, to be honest, but I loved it. To hear her say that was perfect. "I love you...wifey." I sit on the bed and find her tickle spot on her side making both of us laugh in tandem.

"What time is it?" She asks sitting up next to me.

"About 7:30. You missed the sunrise. It was amazing."

"I'm sorry. I've just been so tired these past couple days."

"Shawn, you don't have to apologize. I get it. Maybe we can enjoy the sunset together on the beach tonight."

"That sounds wonderful," she smiles.

"So, I feel like I have to ask because I don't think you've ever really talked about him."

"Zak, we don't need to talk about Luke."

"Luke?" I ask surprised that she thought I was talking about him. "I mean your father."

Shawn's face goes blank, but quickly says, "No."

I remember shortly after Shawn and I first met she had mentioned that her dad was a long story. I wanted to know why she never wanted to talk about him and I wondered if she ever talked to him. "No? What do you mean, no?"

"I mean I don't want to talk about him," she answers coldly.

"You don't feel like you should get in touch with him since..." I stop not really knowing how to bring up her terminal cancer.

"Since I'm a ticking time bomb?"

"That's not what I meant."

"But it is."

"I guess I just want to understand why—,"

"Zak!" Shawn says a little too loud making me unwillingly jump. "I'm sorry, but you don't need to understand. Not when it comes to him." She stares at me with plea in her eyes. "Just drop it. Please."

Shawn leaves me to myself sitting on the bed as she walks to the bathroom. I don't mean to upset her. That's the last thing I want to do these days. Her phone starts vibrating on the nightstand and I glance over to see it's him. Speaking of her father, he was calling. I let it ring planning on just having it go to voicemail, but I couldn't resist and I answer at the last second. "Hello?"

"Who's this?" Shawn's father asks confused.

"This is Shawn's...friend," I answer quickly in a panick. I'm sure she hasn't ever told him about me so I wasn't about to say that I was her husband. Kind of...
