Chapter 30: The Voice in the Dark

I can't stop coughing. It almost feels as though my lungs are filling with water. I'm drowning and can't breathe. This was the worst coughing spell I've had since I first found out about my cancer. I bring my hand up to my mouth as I taste something metallic. As I shine my flashlight on my hand I see the blood. It's everywhere. I'm sure I probably look like a vampire who's just taken their blood meal.

Bang!

This was louder, closer. "I have to move," I tell myself. Continuing to cough with almost every step I find my way out of the TB room, but I'm turned around. I shine my light right, then left trying to determine which way will bring me out of this mess. I lean myself up against the wall, coughing some more. "Gross," I spit leaving a small puddle of blood on the floor. I shine my light both ways again and head back in the direction I came from. Or at least so I thought.

I went thru the same door hoping I'd find myself back in Jeffrey's Hallway, but I must've missed a turn in this endless hall. "Fuck. Where the hell am I?" I think this was the area where Aaron was earlier with the Ovilus. I stop to do a 360 with my light. I'm so lightheaded. I feel like my world is spinning. I breathe heavy and cough again leaving a fresh metallic taste on my tongue. "Oh, man," I drop to my knees. "I can't...brea—," I fall over to my side and pass out.

Zak's POV

"Dude, where's Shawn?" Aaron asks as I'm walking out the front door of the manor to nerve center.

"What?" I furrow my eyebrows in confusion. "Are you trippin, man? She's right behi—," I turn around and see no one. "Shit. Why does she fucking do this!" I waste no time in rushing back in the building and heading to the direction of Jeffrey's Hallway where we were last together. "Shawn!" I yell for her. The hall was empty besides our X camera and a chair. I call our her name again. The air is quiet, too quiet. I don't know what to do and I instantly think the worst.

"Zak!" Aaron shouts to me. "You find her?" Aaron is running down Jeffrey's Hallway to me with a camera guy.

"I don't...I don't know where she is. This is where we were. I don't know where she is," I'm frantic, panick coming thru my voice with no shame.

"We'll find her, man."

Okay...okay. Pull yourself together, Zak. Think. I instruct Aaron to check the second floor just in case she made her way there and I keep on the first.

"What's going on, Zak?" Jay calls thru the walkie.

"We're trying to find her. You and Billy keep a close eye on the monitor to see if you can see her on any cameras."

"You got it."

I hysterically search for Shawn in these mazes of hallways almost forgetting there's a camera guy following me around. I'm too worried and focused on finding her to tell him to leave. Just as I turn the corner to walk thru the doors leading to the TB room, I hear a voice. "Hey," a loud whisper drawing me closer in the direction.

"Shawn?" I call out in hopes it was her. It's empty. There's no one. "Did you guys see anyone in the TB room?" I walkie to Jay and Billy. They both confirm the room had remained empty, but that Shawn was here earlier.

"It looked like maybe there was something wrong?" Billy questions.

"What? What do you mean? Why didn't you say anything?" I'm growing frustrated.

"Dude, it was like right before you walked out here."

"Could you tell what was happening? Where did she go?!"

"I don't know, Zak. It seemed like she was doubled over. I thought I heard her coughing."

Shit. "Aaron do you see anything up there," I walkie to Aaron on the second floor.
