Shawn's POV
It's bright. Way too bright as I attempt at opening my eyes. I had no idea where I was taken. I look around as best I can and there's a sea of screens and people surrounding me. "Ma'am, can you hear me?"
"Mmm," I groan unable to make real words. A hospital. This was definitely a hospital. My worst nightmare.
I look over to my right and see a fluid bag with a red label. I knew that meant only one thing. They were pumping me with chemo. "No."
"What was that, ma'am?" Someone asks me. A nurse I think by the looks of her green scrubs.
"No chemo," I mumble still trying to come back to life.
"I'll go get a doctor."
I trace the line into my arm that's flowing with the chemo and attempt to pull out my own IV. "Oh, no you don't," the doctor rushes in and moves my hand away. "This is for your own good."
"I don't want anymore chemo!" I try to explain but with failed attempt the chemo keeps flowing. I suddenly get that all too familiar nauseous feeling in my gut as I awaken more.
The doctor kept my room door cracked open allowing me to hear the commotion going on at the nurse's station right outside my room. "Let me see her!" Since the blinds are closed I can't see who it is but I'm sure that's Zak's voice.
"Sir, you need to calm down," a woman tells him.
"Everyone needs to stop telling me that. Please, I need to see her!" I hear something slam, possibly his hand, on the nurse's desk.
"Bro, don't make them call security. Please, man." That's definitely Aaron.
"Dr..." I pause as I don't know my doctor's name.
"Dr. Loren," she smiles as she listens to my heart with her cold stethoscope.
"Please. That man out there. Can I please see him?"
"As soon as I'm done with my assessment you can have as many visitors as you please," she assures me. Dr. Loren seems like a nice enough doctor. She's a tall, skinny woman probably in her thirties. Her smile shows off a perfectly white, straight smile and her blonde hair rounds her face with a bob cut.
"Then can you please tell him that before he breaks something?" I half joke with a crooked smile.
Dr. Loren gets one of her nurses to calm Zak down outside my room just as she finishes with my exam. "You can go see her now," Dr. Loren tells Zak on her way out the door.
Tears flood my eyes at the sight of him. He looks a wreck. His hair was disheveled and his clothes looked like he had slept in them for three days. "Zak," I cry. "Please. I don't want chemo. Tell them to stop."
"Shhh," he comforts me. He lays his hand on my forehead and strokes my hair kissing my cheek. "I'm sorry, babe." His eyes are bloodshot as he chokes back sobs. "I don't have authority to make your medical decisions. They won't listen to me." Zak wipes the tears from my face and sits next to my bed. He interlocks his fingers with mine and rests his hand down on my mine being careful not to disturb my IV lines. I can hear his quiet sobs and feel his teardrops soak my hand.
"I'm so sorry, Zak," I reach over and stroke his hair with my free hand. He slowly looks back up at me.
"Where the hell did you go?" Sorrow is suddenly covered by frustration in his voice.
"I heard something." I start.
"What?"
"I heard a voice. As we were leaving Jeffrey's Hall together I heard a voice. I was actually surprised you didn't hear it."
