Knock knock.
Aaron and I go to Jay's place to tell him and Kelsey the news. As much as I hated to do this right now I knew it wasn't going to get easier anytime soon so I just needed to tell them. "Hey, man! You're back! You're...shit," he stops and sighs as he noticed my red, swollen face from the endless stream of tears I've had for two days. He pulls me in for a hug before Aaron and I step inside.
"What's going on?" Kelsey asks as she walks over to us from the living room. We don't have to say anything for her to know and she falls to her knees in tears.
This was all too much for me. How could the universe be so cruel and let me fall in love with a girl that I couldn't actually have? Just then in the chaos of the sobs, her mom calls me. Shit. I had gotten distracted by her picture that I totally forgot to call her mother. I quickly gather my composure as best as I can and step back outside to answer. "Hello?"
"Zak. Thank, god. Are you okay?"
"Um, yeah," I lie.
"You made it home safe?"
"I did. Thank you."
"Zak, it's okay for you to not be okay."
And at that, I break down again. "I'm not. I'm definitely not okay."
"I'm so sorry, Zak. I know how much you loved Shawn."
I flinch at her name as I had not even been able to say it myself since she passed. "Um, I'm sorry too. I gotta go." And I hang up. I hated ending it like that, but I couldn't hear what she had to say. Not now anyways.
I head back inside Jay's place and find him, Kelsey and Aaron on the couch in the living room. I needed to get away from here. I couldn't listen to them crying anymore. Dealing with myself was enough. I'm just glad they knew. "Aaron, I gotta get outta here. Jay can you—,"
"Yeah, I'll give him a ride later," he answers my thoughts.
"Thanks."
I didn't know at the moment where I was going, but I knew I just had to get somewhere. Far. After driving for about 20 minutes I decide to keep in the direction of the Grand Canyon and visit the place where she had professed her love for me to the whole world. I find a smile as I remember the day.
I drive as fast as I can without blue and red lights showing up in my rearview and I finally make it. I run towards the edge of the canyon fighting large crowds of tourists and stop as I hit the rope blocking me to going any further. I jump the rope as I had before and carefully find my footing to the same rock that overhangs the canyon. Step after step I take to the edge. I peer at her picture on my lock screen again before screaming...
"I LOVE YOU SHAWN!!"
I instantly fall to my knees breathing heavily. The cool October breeze hits me and a sense of peace washes over me. I close my eyes and cry silently with a smile on my face. It was her. Shawn...Shawn was with me in this moment. She was the best thing that's ever happened to me. Every moment with her since day one flies thru my mind like a flip book. I had always thought being with her was my next adventure, but really, I was hers. These were her adventures. The breeze flies across my body now in the opposite direction leaving me chilled to the bone.
"I love you."
