"What are the Fae of the Fates, Kettleburn?" Dad says calmly, he crosses his arms and stares at Kettleburn.
"There are multiple kinds of Fae, Remus. The Fae of Ethereal, the Fae of Chiaroscuro, and the Fae of the Fates." Dumbledore says quietly, "You'll need Kettleburn to tell you the differences, that's all I know."
"The Fae of Ethereal are the most basic, and therefore the most common fae. They deal with nature, and there are not really any dividing lines between the different types, they all blur together, some have multiple talents, some don't. The Fae of Chiaroscuro are the fae of Light and Darkness, the two types being Day Fae and Night Fae. The Ethereal and Chiaroscuro share one thing, they can't talk, it is impossible for them to make sounds."
"Thea-Marie couldn't..." Dad mumbles. Oh, yeah, one other thing, Thea-Marie? That was my mom's name. Small note there."
"But Lupa can." Dumbledore finishes.
"Exactly, and because of that she must be one of the last three choices, one of the Fae of the Fates." Kettleburn is excited.
That can't be good, last time he was excited he treated me like I was an animal, mainly, five to ten minutes ago.
"Well, there are three of them. The Life Fae, Death Fae, and Void Fae. Void Fae are the least powerful, they can basically open a small void, maybe as big as a basketball, and anything inside that void disintegrates,
Dad stands up straighter, "That sounds problematic, can they disintegrate anything?"
"If a living thing is inside the void, it's whole body has to be inside for any part of it to disintegrate, so they aren't really that dangerous, to humans anyway." Kettleburn leans against Dumbledore's desk "Life fae can summon the spirit of life and using it can heal any wound. It's a special gift, but if the person is already dead, they can't do anything, if a person is dead they have passed into the realm of the Death Fae. Death Fae are the most powerful and most dangerous. At the height of their power they can summon Death himself, and when they have summoned him they wield his power as well as their own. Death is their servant. The last recorded Death Fae died ten years ago, Khaalida Gaunt, a distant relative of... He Who Must Not Be Named, she had to be killed three times before she was finally killed with the fourth attempt, she was almost one hundred years old."
I roll my eyes, I did not sign up for this. "That's fun. Can I go now? I'm tired, plus I'm skipping dinner for this. Maybe if I leave now I can get food, so if you will excuse me..."
The fire in the grate explodes with green sparks and the all to familiar face of the man who killed my mother glares out. He locks eyes with me and smiles as his hand flies forward. Dad jumps in front of me but whatever it is goes straight through him leaving no trace. Something slams into my chest and I look down to see the hilt of a knife protruding from between my ribs as the man disappears in a swirl of green sparks. I stare at the hilt for a moment before looking up at Dad. The look of pure anguish on his face could rip my heart out if it hadn't already stopped beating.
