"Welcome to Slytherin House, here we value Pride, Ambition, and Cunning. Our emblem represents us as the Serpent, the wisest and most cunning of creatures, and you would do well to remember what else it represents, a serpent slighted does not easily forgive." The prefect looks around at the small group of ten, maybe fifteen Slytherin first years, and smiles, "But you should also remember we Slytherins look after our own. Slytherins are brothers. The corridors of Hogwarts can throw up surprises for the unwary, and you'll be glad you've got the Serpents on your side as you move around the school. As far as we're concerned, once you've become a snake, you're one of ours – one of the elite. Because you know what Salazar Slytherin looked for in his chosen students? The seeds of greatness. You've been chosen by this house because you've got the potential to be great, in the true sense of the word. Well, I think that's all for now. I'm sure you'll like our dormitories. Unlike the other houses, we value your privacy, each of you have your own room, that has been decorated and furnished to match your specific personality. Each room has a window. As you'll see, they look out into the depths of the Hogwarts lake. We often see the giant squid swooshing by – and sometimes more interesting creatures. We like to feel that our hangout has the aura of a mysterious, underwater shipwreck with it's silver lanterns hanging from the ceilings. You'll sleep well; it's very soothing, listening to the lake water lapping against the windows at night."
Draco turns to me and smiles, "See? You'll love Slytherin."
I smile back, so this is what the hat meant, you'll be alone, but still have friends... "I guess so! Hey, do you want to go see our rooms? I want to see what mine looks like!"
"You... don't know what it's going to look like?" One of the older Slytherins laughs, "Come on! It's made for you of course you're going to know! I knew before I was near it!"
"Because the door was open Flint!" a girl turns to me, "don't worry about Flint, he's an idiot, always tries to impress the first years, I'm Gwynyth, if you need anything, let me know!" She smiles and walks away Flint rolls his eyes at her back and walks the opposite direction. Draco grabs my hand.
"Come on! Lets go see what they look like!"
"Okay! I'm coming!" I smile as Draco pulls me down the hallway, he's... really excited about this. I've never seen anyone this excited for anything... Then again, I haven't seen people.
"Here's yours! Hey, mine is right across from yours! This is awesome!" I laugh as Draco pulls me into his room, "Wow! this is awesome! Okay, lets go see yours now!"
"Hang on! You have a bookshelf, I want to see what you like reading!"
"Later! Let's go see your room!"
"What about the loft? Don't you want to explore your room?" To be honest, do I want him to see what my room might be like?
Draco drags me across the hall and throws open my door. "Woah."
"Yeah, woah."
The ceiling is formed by a high, glass dome, revealing the tons of water above us, a loft about half way up holds bookshelves filled to bursting with books and small objects that are left unidentifiable because of how far away they are. In the far corner of the room there is a large window seat looking out onto the landscape of the lake, which, surprisingly, is teeming with life. Small green fairy lights are strung everywhere, giving the room a soft glow.
"Hey, what's this?" Draco points to a television set in a corner of the room with a couch in front of it.
"Oh awesome! A TV! I don't think it'll work but-" I press the power button-"It does! Check it out Draco! We can watch movies!"
"What are movies?"
"You don't- oh, right, pureblood. It's a muggle thing, but I enjoy it, I'm surprised wizards haven't caught on yet!"
"well, what does it do?"
"Um... I show you later, it's kind of confusing." Draco raises an eyebrow, "Okay, scratch that, really confusing. I'll show you later." A knock sounds on my open door.
"Hey, you'll want to get to sleep, we have to be somewhere tomorrow morning, normally it doesn't matter, but they're handing out schedule's tomorrow, so you actually have to be at breakfast" Gwynyth smiles, "Just so you know." she walks away down the hallway and we hear her door closing quietly.
"Okay, well, g'night Draco, see ya tomorrow I guess." I smile as I shoo him out of my room and close my door.
You were right sorting hat, Slytherin is the best for me. Thanks. I can almost hear a tiny voice whispering back to me.
