"There you are. I didn't think I would be seeing you this soon, but you were always prone to trouble, weren't you?"
A pale, dark haired boy around my age sits on a bench near me, one foot resting on his knee. Everything else is shrouded in a dim, grey mist. "Come sit with me, Lupa, you don't know how long I've been waiting to finally see you, how long I've been waiting for you to come visit me."
"Who are you?" I sit next to him.
"Death."
"So you've... come to get me? Because-" I put my hand to the knife hilt, but it's not there.
"No, I can't take you away yet. The world can't end. Not for a long time still." He's smiling gently at me, almost like Dad smiles.
"What do you... what do you mean 'the world can't end'?"
"Well, someone has to control me when I go raging around killing everyone."
"...raging around killing everyone?"
"Yes, that's why Death Fae exist. To control me. To make sure I don't go on a killing spree."
"You go on killing sprees." I can feel the laughter in my voice, but that isn't funny Lupa. That isn't funny. Killing Sprees are not funny.
"Well... not anymore. Death Fae stopped that.
"Really?"
"And on the flip side, I ensure that you don't go on a killing spree. You and I make a balance, for the safety of humanity." he smiles at me again, "So no, I can't, as you say it, 'take you' yet. You have to stay awhile. At least until there's another Death Fae to take your place, which won't be for a long while. You're the last of them."
"The... last?"
"Yes. There used to be a lot of them, but Faehunters are terrifyingly good at their jobs, now there's usually only one at a time, and if there's more than one the extras die pretty fast.
"But... if we're so important, why do they want to kill us?" Well, I guess it's technically just me.
Death sighs and rolls his eyes, "You know how humans are, anything that they don't understand scares them, and anything that scares them has to go. At least, that's what they think."
"Like me and Dad."
"Nope, just you. They understand werewolves, to a certain extent. Some people even feel sorry for them, but fae? Fae break the 'natural order'. They 'mess things up'."
"oh."
"So anyway, I have to send you back."
"Okay."
Death laughs, "You know, the last Death Fae-"
"Khaalida Gaunt?"
"Yes her, she wasn't to happy about having to go back, but she only 'died' three times before I could send her on, I expect you'll be visiting me a lot more, Kyle Quade is hard to get rid of."
"Kyle Quade?"
"Yes, the particular Faehunter who is after you. The only way to really get rid of him is to kill him. It's unfortunate but there it is." Death shrugs, "Shall I send you back now?"
"Can I visit you sometimes? Without him killing me?"
"You have to die to see me..."
"I can do that." Death smiles.
"And how do you send me back?" He smirks.
"Like this." He stands up and pushes me backwards off the bench. Before I hit the ground I'm sitting up, gasping for air, on the floor of Dumbledore's office.
"Lupa! Are you alright?" Dad pulls me into a hug as the knife falls from my chest and clatters to the floor.
"Dad! I'm okay!" Dad holds me out at arms length.
"Hey, what happened to..."
Kettleburn grips my shoulders, drags me to my feet and swings me around to face him.
"Open your mouth!"
Um, absolutley not. No.
"Mm-mm."
"Lupa..." Dad turns my head towards himself, "Please be cooperative."
I sigh and open my mouth. Kettleburn grabs my chin and jerks my head back in his direction.
"OW! That hurt you sadistic experimental- gaackkk" Kettleburn shoves his finger into my mouth and forces it to open wider.
"Her canines! Professor Dumbledore! Her canines!"
Kettleburn beams at Dumbledore as he bends down to look into my mouth. "Yes, Kettleburn, her canines are different."
"Yes!" Kettleburn turns me towards Dad and points into my mouth, "Her canines have elongated!"
I pull away from Kettleburn, "What does that mean oh great and mighty expirimentor?"
"LUPA! Be polite!" Dad frowns at me for a second and then turns to Kettleburn. "What does that mean professor Kettleburn?"
"Mr Lupin, you're daughter is a Death Fae, the most powerful of the Fae. She can summon Death himself." Dad stares at me for a second, and then turns to Kettleburn.
"Death? As in... six feet under never coming back?" oh my goodness that is terrifying. What happens if she accidentally...
"You don't have to worry Dad. He's nice."
"WHAT?!" Dad stares at me.
"He's nice."
"Lupa... Death? Death is nice?"
"Yeah. He's nice. He talked to me and explained everything. And then he showed me how to come back and stuff."
"Lupa? Are you okay? Maybe you should... Professor Dumbledore? Could she go to the hospital wing?"
"Dad! I'm fine! Seriously, he was talking to me and he was really nice."
Oh dear... the dagger must have had a more serious effect than we thought... Kettleburn turns to Dumbledore. "Yes, she really should go to the hospital wing, and maybe-" he picks up the dagger- "have Professor Snape check this dagger, for poisons or hallucinogens or... something."
why does no-one believe me? I'm telling the truth!
Dad quickly gives me a hug and Dumbledore holds the door open for me as I walk out of his office.
"I will be asking Madam Pomfrey if she saw you Lupa..." The door closes behind me and I walk down the moving spiral stairs. I look in on Madam Pomfrey when I pass the hospital wing, but I don't have her check me. I know I'm fine.
