"Chris, I can't be with you if you have to keep going away. I have your child, it can't live without a father. You might die on missions, Chris, you might die!" Freya sobbed.
I remember my love of my life crying as I held her in my embrace.
I used to be in the military, working for the special forces. I had gone for many missions that lasted for months and even up to a year. I had met Freya on one of my missions in raiding an illegal brothel. She was like beauty in the midst of the chaos, the only one catching my attention.
She was rescued out of being a prostitute, dishevelled in torn clothes. As we were transporting the victims, I saw her trembling in the corner. I handed her my jacket and sat beside her.
"Thank you." she mumbled. "No, it's fine." I said. "Thank you for saving me from that hellhole." she mumbled again. She leaned her head on my shoulder and I didn't know what to say.
After the mission, she was brought into interrogation. I was not in charge so I did not see her as much. It was until I saw her again.
She looked the same, long brown hair flowing as she ran to me and the same smile when she stopped in front of me. "Hey, I'm finally free." she grinned ear to ear telling me the news.
I couldn't help but smile too.
A strand of hair was stuck onto her face and my hand moved naturally. I tucked the strand of hair gently behind her ear as her bright green eyes stared into mine. Her cheeks reddened ever so slightly, and I felt mine heat up.
badump.
Why is my heart beating so fast?
I never knew that love felt jittery.
We spent a lot of time together, from days, to months and eventually to years. The only difference was that she now worked at the coffee shop near the station. Well, not only that, she became my girlfriend. She moved in with me and eventually we settled down.
I remember her walking into the room and sitting down on the bed. She handed me something and I looked at it.
A pregnancy test.
I looked at her, and I felt my eyes start to water.
She took me into her arms and I hugged her back. I was going to be a father.
I had so many plans with the child, I wanted to teach it how to ride a bike and play a game of catch.
I thought the joy would be forever, but like they all say, it never truly lasts.
I was deployed overseas when Freya was four months pregnant. Due to that, we had multiple arguments about me leaving.
I was being deployed to an active shooting area to subdue the conflict.
"Chris, I can't be with you if you have to keep going away. I have your child, it can't live without a father. You might die on missions, Chris, you might die!" Freya sobbed.
It was too hard, I couldn't just leave her to raise the kid. But I can't leave the military so suddenly.
We hadn't talked for a few days as she avoided me. I can't just leave my wife alone.
For her, I was ready sacrifice anything.
"Sir, please discharge me." I pleaded with my boss at that time and after much discussion, he discharged me.
