——————————————————————————— <Blair, present> I woke up in a cold sweat.
I threw my bed covers aside and sat at the bedside. What a horrible dream, I thought. I took a sip from my bottle before heading to the shower.
The cold water hit my face, and the memories of that night replayed in my mind. Fuck. I ran my hands through my hair and washed it. I heard a soft knock on the door and it was my dad.
"Hey, there is...someone here for you," he paused in between. That's odd, no one would come to our house, much less for me.
I put on a shirt and shorts and headed down. "Day, who is looking for-" I stopped as I saw someone in an officer uniform. He took out a gun and pointed it at dad. "D-Dad, what is this?" I stuttered as he walked closer to dad, pressing the muzzle on his head. "STOP!" I shouted at him. It seemed like he was going to pull the trigger.
My natural instincts acted on its own
I shouted at my dad and the officer turned his head.
That's my chance.
I ran towards him and tackled him with my full body weight. He fell over as I toppled onto him. I struggled yanking the gun from his grip but I succeeded somehow. I raised my fist and was about to plough his face.
"Blair, stop!" my dad shouted.
My fist only inches away from his face.
I was not going to stop but my dad yanked me away from the man.
"Let me go, you shouted for me to stop when he held a gun to your head?!" I shouted. "I am going to report-" he cut me off.
"It was a test." His voice overpowered mine. "What?" I shouted, not realising what he said.
"I said it was a test." he said, sounding more this time.
"You didn't tell me that you raised a monster." the man said. I glared at him and carefully made my way to dad. He sighed, pushing me in front of him
"This is Captain Abel, or should I say investigator Abel."
Captain?
"Blair...I know that you have been searching for her murderer." he started. "I know that you have reached out to people to get more evidence." my eyes widened at his words.
"What is wrong with trying to find out who killed mom?" I said, almost shouting. "I saw them hit mom, they shot her." I shrieked.
"There is nothing wrong with that, it is just that you have not made any progress at all, right?" Abel said, raising both his hands.
"What do you know?" I sneered at him.
"Mhm, fierce." he hummed. "Well, it seems that you could use some help in your investigation." I shot my dad a glance and he merely nodded at his statement.
Abel pulled out a file from his bag and slid it across the table. I stared at him and then at the file. I flipped open the file to see some sort of profile. What shocked me was that it was my portfolio.
It had the records of everything, from my school to the part time jobs that I had. "This is an offer from me." I gaped at him as if I heard something wrong.
"Dad, what is the meaning of this?"
"I know you have many questions to ask me, I will explain it later." he said as he slid an application form to me.
On the top of the form, it said 'Military Enrolment'
He wants me to join the military, the fucking military.
"I know that you had plans to find her murderer, ever since you came back that day." my dad said.
Damn it, he was keeping track of me all this time.
"No I'm not going. I am not just going to accept an offer from a stranger who casually came in and threatened to shoot my dad."
"Ms Weiss, this is an opportunity that you can't miss, do consider it." Abel said in a warning tone. Who does he think he is?
My dad was watching me intently, waiting for my answer.
I looked back at Abel who now had a blank face. I frowned at him and he merely raised an eyebrow
Why are they so keen on me joining? Wouldn't they usually want to leave the kid out of this?
"Is the military the only way?" I sighed. "Well, it is the most effective way." Abel shrugged.
It didn't matter, if I can avenge mom, I will do anything to make it happen.
