The half hour drive to the airport was full of steady conversation and Alexa couldn't calm the butterflies crashing around inside her stomach. Chris was so utterly easy to talk to and laugh with. She couldn't remember the last time she had met someone like him.
She kept telling herself to not get too excited, too fast, though. We haven't known each other that long. And he's got this crazy ass job that takes him literally all over the world. He's not even going to be in the city terribly long.
She tried to shake away the thought and as she did, Chris pulled up to the drop off curb at JFK. He put the car in park and she saw him look over at her from her peripheral vision.
"Everything okay?" Chris asked, eyebrows narrowing with concern.
Alexa immediately tossed a smile onto her face, but even she felt that it didn't quite reach where her usual smiles did, "Yeah. Just not looking forward to the plane ride. If I'm being honest, I get a bit nervous." Not a complete lie.
"You'll be a-okay," Chris said, as he patted Alexa's knee and left his hand there for a moment before he gave it a light squeeze and pulled his hand away. "At least it's a short flight."
"Yeah," Alexa agreed absentmindedly, "I honestly should've just drove, but my parents insisted on me flying."
"Ah, parental pressure. My favorite." Chris joked.
Alexa couldn't help but to laugh in return. She knew that he could tell there was something else on her mind, but he was letting it go.
"Thank you again for everything this morning," Alexa said, leaning her head back onto the headrest, but lulling it to her left to look at Chris.
"Of course," Chris said with a chipper smile.
There was a brief silence afterwards as the radio quietly played some obscure cover of the song I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
When Alexa turned to look over at Chris, she was surprised to see him already looking at her, his eyes flicking up and down her body briefly before they focused on her lips.
Chris reached up to touch her face gently, cupping her cheek in his hand. His thumb drifted lightly across the apple of her cheek and down to her lips, running down them for a moment and ending on her chin before he leaned over to kiss her.
His lips were soft on hers, but firm and confident. Alexa kissed him back easily. It felt like breathing, automatic and simple. It also felt like breathing in the fact that she felt like she couldn't live without it.
She kissed back more fervently, her tongue swiping across his lips as he allowed her in. Alexa leaned in, gripping his shirt tightly to not only pull him closer but to keep herself from floating away.
Alexa lost track of the moment, unsure if the passing time had been seconds or minutes. Eventually they separated, though their foreheads stayed touched together as they caught their breaths.
"We should, uh, probably get your bags." Chris sighed out as he let his hand slip from Alexa's cheek down to the side of her neck.
"Ri—right." Alexa nodded as they finally separated.
Chris grabbed his baseball cap from the center console and slid his hands through his hair before he put it on. He grabbed his sunglasses for good measure as they both got out of the car at the same time, shutting their doors and heading for the trunk.
Chris leaned in to grab both of her bags and set them on the pavement by their feet.
"Thank you again, Chris." Alexa said quietly, still feeling the flush across her face from what happened moments ago.
