The explosion had thrown them both back into the adjoining room, but only he had woken up.
Through his hazed vision and pounding eardrums, he spotted her in the crumbled fixtures. She was unnervingly still.
Although he could barely hold himself up, he rushed to her side, his leg threatened to buckle beneath him as he limped through the excruciating pain of the deep split of flesh down his thigh.
As he knelt beside her, he placed his hesitant fingertips to the shallow curve of her neck but the faint pulse he had hoped would be enough to keep her with him was non-existent.
His eyes screwed shut as he attempted to stop his head from spinning. He felt the ground beneath his legs grow warm and found he was sat within a pooling of blood. Her blood.
The initial shock wore off and his breathing grew ragged and he leant forward to grab her shoulders, shaking her gently.
"Chris?...", he asked softly, his voice cutting through the ringing of silence.
Nothing. Her skin had turned blue underneath the ash that covered her face.
The tears fell down his face as he shifted to support his arm under her head, her lifeless body lay upon his injured lap.
"No, no, no... Chris you can't- you have to open your eyes please-", he begged.
His hand shook, as it caressed her cold cheek.
The trail of blood that trickled from her hair line just below the edge of her helmet, reached under his palm and crossed her jawline.
The voices of his team mates yelling for his reply were a distant sound as his sobs were the only thing he could hear. They grew heavier in his chest as his heart shattered into a million pieces.
"No!-", he gasped, as he suddenly woke to a darkened room.
His eyes fluttered around adjusting to his bedroom and tried to catch his breath. His bedroom. He was in his bed. No explosion.
A hand gently snaked it's way across his bare chest, and he flinched again.
"Hey, hey, hey, it's just me", her soothing voice carried over to him. He turned to see Chris' worried face beside him, as he heaved the air in and out hurriedly.
She was here with him. She was okay.
He reached up to hold her forearm, his grip strong.
Chris had never seen Street seem so scared.
"You're- you're okay? You're okay", he asked her but finished by ensuring himself that he could see that she was fine, his terrified gaze examined her hastily.
"Yes, yes I'm fine, but you're shaking, Street, what's going on?", Chris asked him as she placed her palm against his cheek.
The image of his blood soaked palm against her cold cheek flashed across his eyes and then it was gone.
He swallowed the lump in his throat and took in a deep breath.
She waited for him to calm down and placed her hand back to his chest, his nervous shaking slowly ceasing, his head finally falling back to rest on his pillow.
Street turned his head to face her again, this time his body shifted onto his side, immediately wrapping her in his arms, her body pressed against his.
Chris knew he needed to hold her, one of his hands tangling into her hair, holding her tighter against his chest, her own hand rubbing circles across his back.
After a few minutes passed, Chris wanted to ask what had happened but Street interrupted her inner thoughts.
"I'm okay. I just.. think I had a bad dream.
I thought I-", he said as his chin rested atop her head."I thought I lost you. We had just finished securing a location for a case and there was an explosive we must have missed in the building..".
Chris pulled her head away from his chest to see his terrified expression.
She felt the wave of emotion crash against her as she could see how much losing her would affect him, she had felt the exact same way about him. The incident on her second last day of SWAT appeared in her mind as she remembered how scared she was for those few seconds she had found Street. They couldn't lose each other, they would never recover.
As her eyes searched his in the darkened room, their faces only inches apart, she assured him that everything was okay.
"I'm here with you. You don't have to worry about that anymore, okay? You can't lose me in the field, cause I'm not out there. I come home to you everyday, and there's a part of me that is terrified of something happening to you while you're at work but I know you and the team won't let that happen", she told him.
Street nodded slowly, gazing back at her.
"I always want to come home to you", he vowed.
"And you always will", she promised and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
