Now she was sure, who Five was. His powers had made it clear. But the truth was weird. Almost unbelievable, but she had seen enough to know otherwise. Nothing was impossible when that academy was involved.
"To my knowledge, you're one of the seven children who were adopted at the start of the academy. Something happened and you went missing, only to reappear years later looking exactly the same."
"Can't confirm, can't remember."
"But you knew her name?" was Patch surprised.
"Yeah, there was a second after that fall, when everything was clear. I could remember and my head wasn't full of fog. But that clearness is gone. There's nothing I haven't told you already."
He seemed to beg for her to believe him even though what he tried to say was crazy. As he was clearly unhappy about the situation, Patch have up. Thinking too much was really tiering as she had discovered.
"Lets forget everything involving that for a second. How did your exams go?"
Fives eyes light up when he heard that.
"Really good although we did have some different opinions about what happened with history professors."
"How did that happen?"
"They thought some things didn't happen like I know they did. We had a heated discussion about that."
"Why were you so sure that you were right and they were wrong?"
"'Cause I saw those things happening. I was there." Five had that strange look again for a split second.
"Oh good then. We know now what happened to you. You traveled in time."
She couldn't help it but to be sarcastic when saying that. She had her own thing with time travel and it wasn't good. There was a good reason why she didn't like the possibility of that. But she apologized to Five some seconds later because he seemed to be hurt by those words.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say that. It's just my nerves acting up. I've been pretty stressed lately."
"I know, it's okay. It will get better." he was really hopeful. But that had a solid reason behind it. He had changed for better so he hoped others could too. But he was still just a kid.
He couldn't understand what was wrong with her. He didn't know it wasn't going to change. She made a good face for him to see and when he left, it all faded away. That had been a blow she wasn't going to recover from. She had lost every member of her team. The case was still unsolved even if they were now completely sure about Fives identity. That didn't answer all those questions and it didn't bring in the killer of her colleagues.
Patch left the hospital without notifying him. She didn't want Five to get in her way as she went back in the crime scene.
Of course it was forbidden and risky, it even made her heart race faster because of the adrenaline, but it was also her only choice.
The bodies were gone. Probably laying in the morgue already. She didn't want to think about it. It was the evidence she was after.
There was blood, there was dust and finally something she knew hadn't been there before. It was a letter, addressed to Five. She opened it without a second thought. Whoever had written it, their handwriting was neat.
"Hello Five.
I hope you're doing well. I'm so sorry about trying to kill you, but you know how they are. No is not an answer. AJ wants to get rid of you and is growing desperate. So better watch your back and protect that lovely cop lady whose friend I killed. You don't want her to die right?
And I know that you know, we're not choosing the means to get you. This time, there will be no mercy, not again. You're impossible to control so they'll just get rid of you. It's easier that way. Hopefully you understand my warning my little friend.
Handler."
The author of that letter turned out to be the old looking lady. Letter itself was a hidden threat. Poorly hidden though, she hadn't even tried. But it was written with thought as those who were not involved couldn't understand anything out of it.
"What did you do Five, for this to go like this?" asked she from herself.
How was that confused kid supposed to protect her? She was an adult, independent lady who had always followed the rules up to this point.
As she had thought that she was alone in the sad building, voice answering to her question, came as an surprise. She jumped up and put the intruder on gunpoint.
It was Five. But he was strange again. Not just a kid whose head wasn't alright. This time he looked almost hopeless.
"I tried to find a way back."
"What are you talking about?"
"You asked me what I did and that's my answer."
"What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at home."
"Funny, I could ask you the same, but it's pointless anyway. I'm having one of these clear moment so right now I can answer every question you have."
He was sad. Maybe because she was weary of him? She sat down on a chair she picked up and asked him
"What really happened here, in this house and who is that Handler who is warning you?"
"I worked for her, she was the one who hired me. You read the letter, right?" she nodded "AJ is her boss. He wants me dead because I'm dangerous to them. I can kill them even in this appearance as I was their best agent. And before you ask, yes I was a killer who killed for them."
She didn't know what to say or how to react. Best choice would have been to run, to give Five up to the police. But she was the police and he had the answers.
"I got stuck in time. No humans there where I went. It was like that for years before she reached out for me. But she didn't help me back. I did all the math myself in the end and made a mistake. That's why I look like this. It has caused quite many problems actually but for a second or so it felt, it actually helped me feel happy."
