18: the second task
Amara wished she could've seen Cedric the morning of the task but she thought it better she didn't. He probably wanted to focus and try to concentrate on the second task and she didn't want to distract him. Instead she joined her friends and fellow Slytherin on the towers looking down at the champions.
"Who do you think is gonna win?" Goyle asked a few people down from where Amara and the Nott brothers were. Draco snickered, "Obviously Viktor Krum."
"Cedric Diggory's got a shot at it too," Theo told Blaise from behind the other boys. He meant it jokingly knowing it'd get on his brother's nerves and it did. Thomas couldn't help but roll his eyes at the thought. He already had to deal with Amara talking about Cedric now he has to deal with Theo too?
"What's the problem Tommy? You don't think Diggory's got a chance?" Theo asked with a smirk. Thomas shoved him lightly due to the use of the nickname but didn't respond to his questions.
"Look! Harry is here," Amara pointed out as the last and late champion finally arrived. From where they stood the couldn't hear their talking until Bagman boomed his voice with a spell.
"Well, all our champions are ready for the second task, which will start on my whistle. They have precisely an hour to recover what has been taken from them. On the count of three, then. One...two...three"
Amara could barely see the champions dive in noticing Harry was a little behind the others but made it in anyway. Thomas's hand went to the top of Amara's head turning her into another direction, "Look there."
She looked to where he directed and there she saw bubbles from where the champions dove down to. It wasn't easy either that this task felt like an eternity. But after an hour, she couldn't stop but cheer when Cedric was the first up. Cho Change wrapped her arms around him tightly as they swam back to the dock. Her brows furrowed in confusion before realizing what was going on. The merpeople were supposed to take something important from the champions and it wasn't hard to tell Cho was Cedric's.
Despite feeling a little indifferent about it she couldn't be too upset. Cho was Cedric's date to the Yule Ball so it's really no surprise she'd be seen as important to him. It only confused her a bit remembering that it was her who spent all that alone time with Cedric that night.
Amara watched him be cheered on by members of his house and others but surprisingly he turned and found her. He flashed her a smile as everyone waited for the rest of the champions.
"There's Krum!" Theo shouted cheerfully using Amara to shake her with excitement. He brought up Hermione Granger and shortly after Harry Potter came up with two people, Ron Weasley and a little blonde girl.
Everyone waited nervously for the judges to finished delegating and after another long wait they must've decided. "Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our decision. Merchieftainess Murcus has told us exactly what happened at the bottom of the lake, and we have therefore decided to award marks out of fifty for each of the champions, as follows....
"Fleur Delacour, though she demonstrated excellent use of the Bubble-Head Charm, was attacked by grindylows as she approached her goal, and failed to retrieve her hostage. We award her twenty-five points."
Applause from the stands. Next came what Amara had been waiting for, "Cedric Diggory who also used the Bubble-Head Charm, was first to return with his hostage, though he returned one minute outside the time limit of an hour."Amara cheered happily along with few others but Thomas stood awkwardly. Even Theo seemed pretty impressed by the Hufflepuff and let Amara rant to him about how well Cedric had done anyway. The winner has yet to be announced but it's no secret that it'd be Cedric.
After more talk Harry Potter ended up scoring second highest to Cedric despite being the last. It was because he saved Fleur's sister too and Cedric seemed slightly bummed at the close call.
Once everyone made their leave Amara rushed down to see if she could congratulate him. When she made it down he was still up the hill returning to Hogwarts a few paces ahead. Just as she was ready to call for him, she stopped.
Cho cut through the crowd to stand next to him congratulating and thanking him over and over again. Maybe now wasn't a good time to talk to him. Cho must've been confused or scared and so was Cedric. Since they're the only two who did it together maybe they had much more to talk about than anything Amara had to say.
Cedric tried looking around for Amara. He wanted to talk to her, he had so much to say that he hasn't been able to since the Yule Ball. He hadn't expected Cho to be the one stuck underwater for him to save but he did what he had to do anyway.
The first thing he'd done when he reached the surface was look for Amara. He found her up clapping and that was good enough for him to know she was cheering him on. Right now he was stuck in a midst of people congratulating him and Cho too.
"That was barking mad! You did so well Ced, it's no surprise I was saved first," Cho said happily, "You must've been well prepared for it ahead of time."
"Not really," Cedric said with a shrug, "I mean, Amara did help me a bit to guess the riddle and find a charm to use but after that I had no clue what would really be down there."
Cho knows there must be something between him and Amara. Obviously she'd always thought Cedric was one of the best looking lads in Hogwarts but Cho could never compete with Amara.
They've gotten closer especially this year so as a friend, she knew her short encounters with Cedric meant nothing compared to the time he spent with her. Amara was also much more praised than Cho. She was a Rosier, a pure blood and a great witch. She was popular and had an entire clan of people at her side. Before Cho got to really know her she thought what other people thought.
Amara Rosier had been nothing but the Slytherin Princess and daughter of a very wealthy and powerful Wizarding family. She always thought Amara's look if indifference or boredom meant she looked down on anyone who wasn't a Malfoy or Nott but obviously that was far from the truth.
Cho realized Amara was a great friend and caring despite looking cold. She also realized that Amara had a lot of pressure on her because of her family that Cho was able to see the relaxation Cedric brought to her. They couldn't be any more different from family life to house and yet they've only grown closer since the start of the year.
So, Cho has decided that what she felt for Cedric was a small crush and what she felt for a Gryffindor meant a little more.
