Chapter One-Hundred-And-Thirty-Seven: Meeting Up And Splitting Up

(The Monster And The Superhero, Pt. 2)

***

It didn't take long for Nancy and Leo to finish answering the questions from the police and get into their cars to join up with the rest of the group at the trailer park. There, they all headed to a picnic table and sat down on it, ten people squeezed together, five on each side.

Rowan was pressed between Steve and Dustin, her mouth twisted in a grim line and her electricity writhing nervously under her skin. She picked at her nails as the group sat in silence for a few moments.

That was, until Nancy asked, "I assume you guys know something's going on about the murders that Leo and I don't, right?"

Rowan shared a look with Steve, Dustin, Alistair, Cami, Robin, Max and Valerie. She looked back to Nancy and nodded.

"Yeah, we do," she confirmed.

Relief filled Nancy's face at hearing that. "So you know something about what happened to Chrissy and Fred?"

"Who's Fred?" Steve asked.

"Someone who works on the paper with Nancy and Leo. Well, worked. He was, uh, also our neighbour," Valerie explained, her and Cami looking at each other and passing a silent message, as Rowan looked at them and Nancy and Leo sympathetically. While she didn't know Fred, and she knew neither of them would be close to him, she knew personally how painful that loss was. The tiny smiles Nancy and Cami gave her told Rowan they appreciated it.

"Back to the original question. We know who's actually doing the killings, Nancy," Dustin jumped in. "It's not Eddie."

Nancy nodded in agreement. "I know. His uncle seemed confident in that when Leo and I talked to him yesterday. He said it could be someone else."

"Yeah. It's definitely someone else. But it's not who his uncle is thinking," Dustin said, and now Nancy looked confused.

"Who, then?"

Steve made to answer, but Dustin stopped him as he looked at Leo suspiciously.

"Are we sure we want to talk with him here?" Dustin asked as he still looked warily at Leo, who looked very confused.

"Everyone here knows. It's kinda unfair if he doesn't," Cami pointed out.

"Plus, Eddie also knows," Alistair added on.

"Yeah, only because he saw what happened to Chrissy," Max argued.

"Still, it's unfair if—"

"Can I jump in?" Leo interjected. Nine pairs of eyes turned to him, but Leo met them back evenly as he continued, "Let me lay out the facts. Two people are brutally murdered in as many days, the police have no idea who it is but I bet they suspect Eddie since the first murder happened in his trailer and the court of public opinion will turn against him, and Eddie is literally gone and can't defend himself or explain what happened. So if you guys know something that could prove his innocence, I would really like to know."
