An Enigma from Past

We kept giggling as we ran everywhere in the garden touching the shrubs and pea pines. My mother was running behind me while my father was running so fast my mother couldn’t catch him. Hence, the target was always me. I could smell the scent of fresh roses that my mother loved growing in our big garden. It always gave me the motivation to do something for the nature. But I was too small to raise this little voice of mine. “Caught you!” I sensed my mother’s hands grab either of my shoulders. No ways! I turned around to run again to catch her. We played tag every evening because I loved it.

Their laughs and giggles were still fresh in my mind. I could remember the times we spent together blaming each other, teasing each other and what not. But now I could only hear silence from their cold body. I could see how they are sleeping with no worries to wake up again. I was never going to hear those chuckles and heartwarming laughs ever again. It was only too heartrending to look at them now hoping they are not tortured anymore.

“Is this our new house, Mommy?” I asked looking at the grand villa standing in front of me. “Yes, sweetheart. Don’t you like it?” My mother asked me. “No, I love it” I said before jumping in my father’s arms. “Daddy, you’re awesome!” I said kissing his cheeks twice making him chuckle. This was the first time we had such a grand house. We shifted to London few days back. And I loved this place already. I had everything I needed. My mother said this was their dream house and were planning since they got married.

I could see the two houses of my parents. They were gently place in a coffin. Now this is going to be the new house for them. When you die, of course you take nothing with you. That’s a silly question to even ask. I was standing in the middle of what looked a graveyard unable to adjust the new atmosphere in my mind. I wasn’t able to analyze things and couldn’t even believe what the truth was. My parents weren’t dead. They said they will always be with me. But they lied.

“Mommy,” I said as I was placed between my mom and dad on their bed, “Daddy,” “Yes, baby?” They asked pulling the covers to my neck and looking at me. “I love you, both. Promise to never leave me?” I asked raising my pinkie. My mother first hesitated then said, “We are always there with you, baby. Pinkie promise” And she curled her little finger with mine. “And we love you too” Dad said as I made myself cozy before going to sleep.

I wouldn’t forget that too. I saw many people standing there and weeping. I could see Aunt Melissa standing like a corpse. It looked as if she may fall off any second. My parents were universal favourite and there were many people who came for their funeral. I was given a chance to sit with my parents dead bodies and cry my heart out while they couldn’t even hear what I said. I looked at their faces which were having scars everywhere. The accident occurred as one truck-driver drove its way through my parents as they were crossing road to get in the car and drive home. It was way too dark at night but this brutal accident was nowhere my parents ever deserved. My face was covered with every tear that rolled down my eyes. Everybody has to die one day.

I attended my grandmother’s funeral with my father. My mother was nowhere to be found. When I found her crying her heart out in front of a coffin, I ran towards her. Father didn’t try stopping me so I ran fast to calm her down. I couldn’t see her crying, never! “Mommy!” I shouted as I gained balance after stumbling a bit. “Mommy, why are you crying?” I asked as she only wiped her tears away to hug me. She didn’t stop sobbing though but I know why she cried. My grandmother died this morning, so was I told. “Granny is alive in heaven, Mommy” I said, “Then why are you crying?” My mother whispered in my ears faltering, “I know baby, but I can never meet her.” I tried to speak but I had nothing to say. “Are you also going to leave me the same, Mommy? Will I be crying like this when it happens to you?” I brought my hands to my mouth in the spur of the moment processing what I just told. “Everybody has to die one day, sweetheart. You just have to hope and pray for them” She said kissing my hair.
