TW: Very slight swearing
Katianne's POV
Today was the first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. I sat next to Hermione, who was obviously studying, while Harry and Ron sat next to each other. One of the Patil twins used magic to make this origami animal fly. "Bring it over here. Over here." Someone said, the paper flying over to a redhead girl, who blew it so that it would fly higher.
"Go on, Seamus. Go on, go on, get it!" Dean exclaimed, leading to Finnigan hitting the paper animal. I laughed, a wide grin on my face as I saw the paper animal fly over the lights. After it came down, Crabbe threw something at it, the whole class 'oohing'. All of a sudden, it caught up in flames, floating down onto the desk of the Patil twins.
"Good morning, children." The obnoxious voice of Professor Umbridge, the new b*tchy teacher, spoke up, all of us turning our heads, locating her in an all pink outfit, standing all high and mighty like at the very back of the classroom. "Ordinary Wizarding Level examinations." She said, using magic to write those words in cursive on the blackboard at the front. "O-W-Ls. More commonly known as 'OWLs'." After she finished talking, she finally arrived at the front of the classroom.
"Study hard, and you will be rewarded. Fail to do so, and the consequences may be severe." With her wand, she made a few stacks of books float over to us, two landing on each of our desks, since there were two people sitting at a table. "Your previous instructions in this subject has been disturbingly uneven." Umbridge continued saying as I took a closer look at my book, which, confusingly, wrote 'Dark Arts Defence: Basics for Beginners' on the cover.
"But you'll be pleased to know, from now on you will be following a carefully structured, Ministry-approved course of defensive magic." She finished saying. "Yes?" Umbridge called out, locating Hermione's raised hand while I flipped through the book curiously, finding nothing magic-related. "There's nothing in here about using defensive spells." The curly haired brunette stated.
"Using spells?" Umbridge questioned, giggling in an annoying high pitched tone. "Well I can't imagine why you would need to use spells in my classroom." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, though Ron was the one who expressed his. "We're not going to use magic?" The redhead quizzed. "You'll be learning about defensive spells in a secure, risk-free way."
"What use is that? If we're attacked, it won't be 'risk-free'." This time, it was Harry who spoke up, his voice laced with aggression. "Students will raise their hand if they want to speak in my class." Umbridge declared, anger laced in her voice. "It is the view of the Ministry that a theoretical knowledge will be sufficient to get you through your examinations, which, after all, is what school is all about."
"And how's theory supposed to prepare us for what's out there?" Harry then questioned, raising his voice ever so slightly. "There is nothing out there, dear. Who do you imagine would want to attack children, like yourself?" Umbridge asked, and finally, I started to get angry, leading to me saying, "Oh, y'know, I'm not sure. Probably... Lord Voldemort." sarcasm dripping from my voice.
People started whispering among themselves, shocked by my sudden outburst. Umbridge was silent for a second before taking a deep breath, slowly saying, "Now let me make this quite plain. You have been told that a certain dark wizard is at large once again. This is a lie-" I cut her off. "It is not a lie! I saw him! I fought him!" I shrieked. "Detention, Ms. Potter!" Umbridge shouted out, leading to me getting pity looks from Hermione.
"So Cedric Diggory dropped dead on his own accord?" The raven haired boy asked loudly. "Detention for you too, Mr. Potter. And Cedric Diggory's death was a tragic accident." The Professor stated in a harsh tone. "Like your birth." I muttered, making sure that she didn't hear me, though some people around me did, snickering about. "It was murder! Voldemort killed him! You must know that!" Harry yelled out.
"Enough!" Umbridge shrieked. "Enough." She repeated in a quieter voice. "See me later, Mr and Ms. Potter. My office." With that said, she giggled, smiling as if none of this happened.
