"Derek? Derek please!" Meredith yelled. She was freaking out
"Mer? What's going on?" He asked and saw Meredith with their daughter Ruby in her arms
"She's been feeling sick-" Meredith whimpered. "Derek- Take her. Please. I'm scared."
"Hey-" Derek walked towards them and wrapped his arm around both. "You are doing amazing. You're the best mom, Mer. Kids get sick, this is normal" He tried to assure her
Meredith was still anxious when she was sick but it had gotten so much better, she even went to med school. During her internship she avoided peds at all costs as she had bad memories of the ward until she actually started working there and felt like she could mean something to the ill kids there but she was terrified when her own daughter started coughing or complained about her tummy. She was scared she was responsible for it.
"Call Dr Wyatt, I'll take care of Ruby" Derek promised
Meredith took off to call Dr Wyatt but suddenly felt a knot in her stomach and returned to Derek and their daughter
"Let me hold her, maybe we should get her some Tylenol" Meredith suddenly switched
"Okay" Derek smiled and felt very proud of his wife, knowing this was hard for her. "Hey. I'm proud of you" He kissed her temple and ran to the bathroom to get something for Ruby
"Shh. How are you feeling?" Meredith went to lay down with Ruby next to her, the little girl sobbing.
"T-Tummy-" Ruby whispered
"Shh. This will help." Meredith assured her and grabbed the heating blanket to place over the girl's stomach
"Here you go sweetie. Swallow this-" Derek helped her
Ruby swallowed the medicine but her face changed immediately. "Yucky!"
"I know, the grape one isn't as good as the strawberry one" Derek said and rubbed the girl's back
"Close your eyes sweetie. Sleep will make you feel much much better." Meredith tried to comfort her daughter. After a little while the girl had drifted off, her hand clutching onto Meredith's shirt
"Close your eyes as well. I'll make sure her temperature doesn't rise." Derek tried
"I don't think I can sleep right now.." Meredith looked at him, her eyes tired and wet
"Hey, you did amazing. She just has a stomach bug like so many kids do." He said and held her tight
"I know- I'm just.. I'm so scared." She quietly admits
"I know you are. But there's no need to feel scared. Ruby will be fine. It's just a regular stomach bug" Derek kissed her forehead
"Hmm.." Meredith nodded. "Did you call your mom and dad?" She asks
"Yeah. I also called your dad." He assures her
"Thanks" Meredith smiled
"Close your eyes, I'm here" Derek said and watched his wife fall asleep
...
Meredith and Derek were sitting on the couch later that day. Ruby was feeling a lot better. She was asleep on Meredith's chest, not wanting to let go of her mom's shirt
"Mama?" Ruby muttered as she woke up
"Hi sweetie. How are you feeling?" Meredith asked as Ruby looked up
"Hi princess" Derek smiled
"Daddy!" She smiled
"Are you feeling a bit better?" He rubbed her back
"Lots" She nodded her head
"That's good, baby. Let me get you something to drink" Derek stood up and grabbed her some juice, knowing it would be important to keep her hydrated after she refused to drink all day
"Mommy and daddy love you so so much." Meredith told her little girl while Derek was kn the kitchen
"Love you lots too." Ruby weakly nodded her head on her mom's chest
"I have a very, very good idea. We're gonna try to eat something and then you can sleep with daddy and me in the big bed, what do you think?" Meredith suggested, wanting the girl closeby for the night
"Watch Cinderella too?" Ruby looked up at her mom with widened eyes
"Sure princess." Meredith laughed.
"I got you some orange juice." Derek walked inside with her princess cup filled with orange juice
"Thank you!" Ruby smiled and took it from her dad, taking a sip
"One more princess, can you do that?" Meredith tried as she knew her daughter had barely drank anything today
"Kay" She takes another sip and hands the cup back to her dad
"Now let's get upstairs. I think my girls need some cuddling." Derek winked as he heard Meredith's idea to watch a movie in bed
"Daddy, up!" Ruby stretched her arms out. Derek carried her and linked hands with his wife
"Let's go take some time for ourselves" He smiled
Even after all these years, even if Ellis had disappeared out of her life that day and already passed away before Ruby was even born, the scars were still visible. Meredith was terrified to get sick herself or see others sick, luckily she had everyone back then who helped her and now she had her own family with Derek.
