It was the second day of September which meant fall had officially started and it also meant kids were going back to school if they weren't back already.
The cafe was now selling pumpkin pie and apple cider again. The sweet smell that emanated from them made the cafe feel warm and cozy.
Gina had two pumpkin pies in the oven that would most likely be gone by the end of the day. She was making Nic's lunch, excited and nervous for her daughter's first day at a new school. She had been praying all last week that Nic would do well in school and make friends quickly.
She grabbed a pen and sticky note from her desk, and wrote a small note to sick inside Nic's lunchbox. It was covered in purple and blue galaxies and had a matching backpack.
Gina smiled when she remembered how excited Nic was to have her own lunchbox and backpack. She told Gina she'd only ever had hand-me-downs. So to have something all her own was very special.
The bus only went through the nearby neighborhoods so Nic would have to walk to a bus stop before she could get to school. Gina didn't think it would be a big deal because it was only a fifteen minute walk from the cafe.
The clock read 7:00 which meant that if Nic wasn't on her way to the bus stop in the next five minutes, she'd miss the bus altogether.
"Bella," Gina called from the stairs,"You're gonna be late, let's get a move on!"
About two minutes later Nic came trudging down the stairs, a scowl on her face.
"Gina, do I have to go?" Nic whined, walking over to where her mother was,"can't you just homeschool me?"
Gina laughed and handed the girl her lunchbox,"I'm afraid I don't have the time. I am running a cafe, ya know."
