Chapter 4: Bitch
Season 5 Episode 4: Snitch
*Trigger Warning*

Elaine walked toward the scene, running a hand through her tousled brown hair. Her body ached from sleeping on the hard floor last night—she had been too drunk to make it to her bed and ended up passing out on the living room floor, just inches from the couch. Her head was pounding, sharp and relentless. She hadn't even had time to take an Advil before being called in.

"Wang, let's go. We're knocking on doors," Jay said, approaching her. He paused for a beat when he took in her appearance—her hair wasn't pulled back like usual or straightened neatly. Instead, it was messy and frizzy, and she still wore the same clothes from yesterday. Dark circles sat heavily under her eyes.

"Okay, let's go," Elaine muttered, rubbing both sides of her head as if she could ease the throbbing with her fingers.

They walked up to a nearby house and questioned a man sitting outside on the porch, casually leaning back in a chair with a worn blue coffee cup in hand. His expression was blank, indifferent.

"I didn't see or hear anything," he said flatly.

"You live across the street," Elaine pointed out, gesturing from his house to the one in question with her notepad. "Twenty feet away. That close."

"I was watching TV. Had the volume up. Anything else?" He took a slow sip from his cup.

"You knew Eddie, right? Good guy?" Jay asked, leaning against the stair railing.

"Great guy."

"Yeah?" Jay looked over at Elaine before turning back to the man. "Then why not help us find the guy who killed him?"

"Not my job."

Jay's jaw tightened. "Oh, so you're okay with him getting killed?"

"Didn't say that. I said it's not my job. There's a difference."

"Not really," Jay muttered, jaw clenched as he turned and stomped down the steps.

Elaine followed him, wincing slightly as the sunlight caught her face. Jay let out a frustrated sigh.

"Relax, Halstead," she said under her breath, trailing a step behind.

"Shut it, Wang," he snapped, not even turning around as he headed to the next house.

Elaine walked up the stairs with a file in hand, heading toward Kim's desk, where the rest of the team had gathered. They were all huddled around her screen, eyes locked on whatever footage was playing. Elaine tried to sneak a peek, shifting on her toes, but couldn't see much. Jay noticed her hovering and stepped aside, allowing her to move in front of him.
