1. The Return

After Nate had visited Elena, Liz had called to inform him and Damon about the car crash which involved Caroline, Tyler and Matt.

So, to find out what had happened the two brothers went to the hospital where Liz was sitting, her cheeks stained with tears.

"Liz," Damon called out as they approached her. "We came as soon as we got the message. Is she okay?"

"She's in surgery." She told them, trying to convince herself that Caroline will be fine. "They're doing everything they can. I need your help, guys."

The Salvatores nodded their heads slightly. "Sure. Anything, Liz."

Liz sighed thankfully and led them off to the side, away from everyone. "Mayor Lockwood is dead. They thought he was a vampire. They put him in the basement."

The vampires glanced at each other before acting shocked. "Mayor Lockwood was a vampire?"

"No, no, no." The blond woman shook her head repeatedly. "A mistake was made. They said he dropped like the others when John's device went off, but he--"

A nurse passed by so Liz stopped talking and leaned in closer to the men before carrying on. "He couldn't have been a vampire. I've known the man my whole life. Now Carol Lockwood is gonna want answers. And all I can think about right now is Caroline and I'm..."

She cut herself off with a loud sob. The middle Salvatore wrapped his arms around her gently and Damon just watched, feeling bad.

"Bonnie, how's Caroline?" Elena asked, slowly turning the girl to face her.

Bonnie sighed. "She's weak. They don't know if she's gonna make it."

"What?" Elena's eyes widen in shock and sadness so the witch embraced her softly. "Is there something that you can do? A spell or something."

Damon walked forward with a smug look on his face. "She doesn't know how. Do you?"

Bonnie glared at him, answering. "No, I don't."

"No, you don't. Because it took Emily years to learn a spell like that." He said, grinning.

The tattooed brother rolled his eyes angrily. "Damon, stop being a dick!"

Damon shrugged innocently, looking back at a smirking Bonnie. "Yeah, well, I can take down a vampire. That spell was easy to learn."

Nathan sighed at their bickering and walked over to Elena. "I can give Caroline some of my blood?" He offered but she immediately shot it down.

"No. No way." The brunette refused sternly.

"Just enough to heal her." He said. "She'll be safe in the hospital. She'll be fine and it'll be out of her system in a day."

Elena stuck to her decision. "It's too risky. I can't agree to that, Nate."

"Do it," Bonnie spoke up, staring at the man intensely. "This is Caroline. Okay? We can't let her die. Do it, Nate, just you and not him."
